A bit off topic, but nothing beats the Tió de Nadal for sheer holiday weirdness. That's the Catalonian log that one beats with sticks to make it poop out presents. There's some really cool carols associated with the Caga tió ("crapping log"), too:

"Caga tió
caga torró,
avellanes i mató,
si no cagues bé
et daré un cop de bastó.
caga tió!"

Translation:

"crap log,
crap nougat,
hazelnuts and cottage cheese,
if you don't crap well,
I'll hit you with a stick,
crap log!"

There's also another fecal-themed Catalonian tradition, the Caganer, or pooping Shepard, who is usually included somewhere in the Nativity scene. I think his popularity even extends as far as Italy, but why both him and the Poop log haven't caught on in the U.S., I can't explain. Seriously, someone call South Park.

Good taste, asbestos.

Ditto that! The ballerina in me can get caught up in The Nutcracker.

Blixa, LMAO!!!

I need to put on my Muppets Christmas with John Denver...

Once again, thank you, Blixa. I sent the link to my daughter, who's trying to create some non-Christian holiday traditions for her family. Though I'm sure it won't interest her (other than to provide a laugh), it's possible that nothing could be better than a festive,*spitting* log that only *spits* when you whack it with a stick.

I notice that you enjoy good music. That being the case, you might want to click on the link in my sig line. I very often have music from Bonnie Prince Billy, an exceptionally creative and talented artist from Kentucky. His video for Cursed Sleep reminds me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings.

One thing that has helped is to look at them the same way I look at Santa songs. It is all part of the current xmas mythology.

What was really interesting was all the religious songs at the public school christmas choir concert I attended the other day. Several Mary and baby songs.

Hey, good idea. Thanks!

Tried this over the weekend - it worked. Thanks!

Hi Buffalo
Buffalo wrote:I can't enjoy the religious Christmas songs as much. The nativity mythology is really quite beautiful, and I love the melodies of songs like Away In A Manger, Silent Night, Angels We Have Heard on High, etc. But I'm over-analyzing the lyrics now instead of just enjoying them.

Perhaps you could sing about nothing? Or sing about gas mixtures that came from nothing that mixed with other gas mixtures that came from nothing to form something? Or sing about what singing used to be before it evolved into singing?

Peace and Merry Christmas, friend. :)

Perhaps you could sing a song about all the little Children that Jesus had murdered back when he was the grumpy Old Testament God Yahweh. :)

Geeez, Buffalo. I was just offering you a suggestion to be able to sing in late December. Why so angry?

Anyway, thanks for the Old Testament reference.
That's the first time I have heard that brought up on the MDB in over 18 seconds. :)

Peace,
