And praise be several months later it rained. What a miracle and testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel.
"During President Snow’s time as prophet, Latter-day Saints in southern Utah were suffering from a drought. While speaking at a conference in the southern Utah town of St. George, President Snow was inspired to promise the Saints that it would rain and they would enjoy a bountiful harvest if they would pay tithing. Though the members paid their tithing, several months passed without rain. President Snow implored Heavenly Father to send rain. Later he received a telegram announcing, “Rain in St. George.” "

I do remember that the movie did portray a gap in time between when Lorenzo Snow gave the sermon/the St. George saints started paying tithing, and when the rain came. No time period is given in the movie, but the actor did have a scene or two of looking disappointed when the news came that the drought was still going. I always assumed it was a few weeks gap.

Yes that is correct. In fact they are doubling down to make sure that people are paying. In our small branch we haven't had a formal tithing settlement for a while. The branch pres would just catch us in the hall or somewhere with a printout and ask if the number was correct.
Now after this letter, we all have to sign up and schedule a meeting with our whole family and go talk to him. I'm sure to intensify the guilt factor for those who have had hard times.
Would it be wrong to ask how much the General Authorities pay themselves, and request that they take a modest pay cut to reflect the difficult times that the rest of us "lay" members are experiencing? Or is it like the US senate where their cost of living allowance automatically increases unless they vote (receive a revelation) to not increase it?

The name of the "king" in Facsimile No. 3 of the Book of Abraham is Isis. Yes...that is her name.

Following the wonderful portrayal of Lorenzo Snow having a stroke at the pulpit, this movie does show quite a bit of time passing between people starting to get with the program on tithing and rain actually coming. It even shows a couple members of the Church on their farm being quite concerned that they are paying tithing but it still is not raining. Even Lorenzo Snow is depicted being worried about this. (by the way, did anyone else notice that they filmed part of this in the Beehive House?)
Also, I hereby prophecy that if people will continue to post messages on Mormon Discussions, eventually it will rain.

Well, lets see, I remember living in salt lake during reagan's recession in the early 1980's. The line for unemployment was long and there were many signs in shop windows saying that they weren't hiring. I had my unemployment check from New York and it didn't go far. I paid my ten percent and went to desseret thrift and got my groceries with the bishops help. I also got some money at christmas from one of the counselors. The church did quite well helping me. And I am sure that it is still happening now.
The LDS welfare system is not doing a good enough job for you?
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world. Joseph Smith We are “to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comfort the afflicted, whether in this church, or in any other, or in no church at all…” Joseph Smith

What guilt feelings? If one pays their ten percent one will get much help if in need from the ward or branch. I have never met a hungry Mormon. Have you? If you ever need help in paying your mortage or rent or food bills, the church is there to help. And that should be a comfort for you and your family. Would you have guilt feelings receiving help from your branch to help you support your family?

I don't think that there is another church in the world that helps its poor like the LDS church does. Does that sit well with you? And as you know, the LDS church is also there for you if you and your family are in need. Now isn't that nice?

Yes, there are probably very few churches who do so comparatively little for the poor as the LDS Church. Good call.

I've met many hungry Mormons. You've probably met 10 Mormons total this century, so I'm not sure your extensive experience is worth the light cotton it's ejaculated on. .
