The reasons for leaving the church back in the early days was mainly due to Joseph Smith and his personality. He either too jovial, too human, too imperfect, too angry etc. Most of the early members who left had their own understanding just how a prophet should be. And their conception doesn't seem to be very human.

Oh really, did they have exit polls for the members who left the church?

More likely scenario is that people left and said they didn't think that Joseph was a prophet, and he in turn said...must be because I'm too jovial...hmmmmm.
