that's just not true. He teaches at a university. He writes material on Islamic studies. He addressing critiques of the Church. He responds to many things other than what you say. Just because the large amount of mocking and ad hom attacks occur in places like this, doesn't mean that is all he does.
2) He is incredibly condescending and passive aggressively insulting in his behavior toward others. Are you saying the purpose of this is not to prompt a flame war? If not, to what end does he engage in this behavior?
So let's get this straight. You say he only responds to mocking and attacks, but when he does he is "incredibly condescending and passive aggressively insulting" and that means its his behavior that causes people to attack him?

I asked him once if he believed that Smith had the ability to locate treasure buried beneath the earth by looking a stone placed in his hat. Despite the simplicity of the question, he would not answer, yes, or no, choosing instead to answer a question I did not ask.
When someone is not willing to give you a straight answer to a simple question about what they believe, you should not assume that they believe all of the claims that they defend.
Great point Jaybear. I have noticed this same thing with all apologists willing to try and defend their faith. They will very rarely discuss their true beliefs on foundational claims. I would go so far as to say the testimony of the average internet Mormon/apologist is closer to my testimony than any true believer's testimony.

Example: his very first comment in the Time Photo thread was arrogant and condescending. No one had attacked him yet, but his comportment guaranteed that it would happen.

The article istelf was condescending and arrogant in a way. Why complain about him doing that which the article was doing? While I can agree he could have responded much less condescendingly, I also recognize that complaints against him are out of whack and stupid.

Yes, I'm aware that the narrative right now is to paint personal experience with Mormonism as condescending when it doesn't fit the PR department's mission statement.
