Re: See ya around, chumps
Bah, Stem really was a horrible defender of the faith, but he I really hate to see him feel like he's not wanted, and to be chased out of town. That just sucks. It's like the kid that gets chosen last in dodgeball - it was because he was fat and unathletic, so it's not like he shouldn't have seen it coming, but he still feels like sh*t when it happens.
Stem/David, you don't have to go. If you decide to go, then farewell, and maybe we'll see you around. I'm sorry you got heckled so much, but you really did bring a lot of it down on yourself.
For some reason you believe that offering any defense at all of the faith is better than not offering a defense, and unfortunately that means that in a situation where there is no reasonable defense, you're just going to offer up some crap anyway simply to be doing your part like the stalwart Saturday's Warrior you are. Offering up obviously crappy arguments to most of the people on this board is like waving a red cape in front of a bull. You could stop a lot of the criticism just by thinking twice before posting half of the "defenses" you do.

Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

I dunno Seth…
I mean, when someone shows up, bumbling around with horrible arguments and damn near stupid comments, just to accuse the community at large of being a bunch of whiners and whose only contribution was to be a punching bag and an object of ridicule, I don’t exactly feel apprehension for their departure.

The bottom line is that stem is gone, making "this place" more "Mormon free". All good as far as Shades' "mission" is concerned. Count them as they disappear, one by one, and even when Simon leaves, we'll hear the fake eulogies. "Oh, we really liked you....".

I don't like to see anyone leave the board, Stem. Okay, there was that one guy, but he wasn't a defender.
Anyway, your OP brought a couple of homilies to my mind. I'll share them with you. Make of them what you will.

Uh, I was fairly nice to him on a regular basis long before he announced his departure. No fake eulogies here. I really enjoyed his sense of humor, which, if I am reading him correctly, was expressed very well in the construction of his persona here. I felt I "got it."

I don't like the knowledge that I can have such an impact on the lives of others.
You're taking way too much credit here, Kish. It would have had no impact if they weren't ready to hear it. These boards alone are a great example of that.
While honesty can hurt, it's the best policy in the long run. It's silly to beat yourself up about this, in my opinion.

Oh, and speaking of honesty... whatever, stem. This news would upset me if I regarded you as honest with yourself, but that's impossible. Enjoy your latest stab at attention.

I hear you. They were not happy as Mormons to begin with. But I do feel some sense of responsibility all the same. I am still friends with them, and they are much happier people now. It is not as if I egotistically take credit for having transformed their lives. And it is not as if their lives are not good ones.

Don't feel guilty about it. We should never feel guilty about it or apologize for teaching the truth. It's the right thing to do as stated by:
