I believe it was a hypothetical shades gives on this page in the thread. I would disagree with shades about it staying in the terrestrial since it comes across as very insulting and degrading.

Jersey Girl While I agree that comments like LDSToronto go way over board and deserve removal and a warning of future suspensions, has you expereince in the past, and particularly lately, that the moderators are not responding to complaints made directly to them fast enough?

To be clear, my post was appropriate for the Telestial forum. That's the violation here. It got moved, as I suspected. No biggie. I wasn't warned of a future suspension.

Stating that this one incident caused extra work for the mods is a bit of an exaggeration, I'm guessing. I mean, the post was pointed out. How hard could it have been to move it to the lower kingdom?

I don't quite understand why anyone would be worried about driving posters off the board. Are we trying to maintain a quota of members?

This is a free speech board. If people don't like what others have to say, and feel like they need to leave because of it, then I guess they don't have the stomach for it. Why should we care?

It'll be a cold day in hell when I tiptoe around other people's sensibilities rather than say what I think. That's the point of this board, isn't it?

I'm not a cage fighter, so I stay out of the cages. I don't complain that I don't want to go in the cage because I'm not interested in fist fighting, and I certainly wouldn't suggest the fighters that do get into the ring be nicer to each other so that we retain more fighters. Wouldn't that be ridiculous? Yeah, I think so too.

On the basis of experience, I think there is good reason to think that a board with a population including a significant number of well-informed and articulate critics of the CoJCoLDS who enjoy debating and like to do it effectively will not be an environment in which LDS posters will wish to remain in the long term. I suspect that would also be true if the critics conducted themselves with scrupulous courtesy and restraint at all times - which, admittedly, they do not, especially if they are ex-mormons

The reason is simple: the LDS will lose the argument most if not all of the time, because, as Sethbag once put it in a luminous formulation, the teachings of the church are not only not true, they are obviously not true. Nobody likes to be told that about the faith that is at the center of their life.

As a result, the only ones who can survive here for any significant time are those who operate at the chatbot level - bcspace, whyme, Simon Belmont. Stemelbow survived for a long time because he was (so far as I can tell) simply impervious to argument. In the end, he too got the point. Bye, stem. I could have got on with you fine if we worked in the same company and obeyed the usual precautionary rules about avoiding religion and politics while talking to workmates. But a discussion board is different.
Zadok:
I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.
Maksutov:
That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

Jersey Girl, my question was in response to Shades example.

I think of bcspace as more of a troll than a chatbot. Yahoo Bot too.

The point is that you knew you were breaking the rules, not about how easy it might be for Moderators can move the post. Stem was posting in the terrestrial forum and should not have to endure being insulted in such a disgusting way. If you want to insult him then do it in the proper forum. As such you should get warned that breaking this rule in the future will result in suspensions(not permanent bans unless one keeps it up over time). Enforcing this would help change this board for the better. I have my doubts it would keep some of these poster(mostly TBM's) to stay since I think other factors play a bigger role in their leaving. That said it is way better then then Mad.

I kinda like being a crony, except when they bring us in for the line-up.

Yes with a caveat. I'm not sure you can get away from insults entirely. (I'm only saying that because I like to sling the occasional insult myself, at least I admit it :-) But the problem I tried to address here, are insults in the form of outright and blatant personal attack. I used LDST's post as a handy example because it was recent.

He says he knew when he posted it that it wasn't fit for the Terrestrial. My question is, then why on earth post it here? If you gotta lob grenades at people, then put it where it belongs. People shouldn't be confronted with that stuff in the Terrestrial.

I would love to tell LDST where his post belongs, but you know, this is the Terrestrial forum.

;-)

If you don't mind, Schmo. I'm going to reply to this in the Telestrial.
