why me wrote: The answer to your questions is no. The church could not function without men or without women. They both compliment the other.

Now you're just being obtuse. Maybe you were at Mass when Bruce R. McConkie said (more than once) that where the priesthood is, you will find the church; and where the priesthood is not, the church is not. (If he had used a Yoda voice, it would have been funnier.)

Your wife should speak up in church, maybe in relief society about it and get a random sampling of opinions.

So once you find out my wife recognizes women are second class citizens in the LDS Church, you want her to ask other women what they think. It is pretty clear by now you will discount any opinions that disagree with yours, even if they are from Mormon women themselves.

why me wrote:

Women in general are the neck of a man's head. And I am sure that it is the same in your home as it is in many homes.

Every good sexist slur bears repeating, I suppose.

Again and again . . .

why me wrote:The point is that consig can show her videos of the church in africa and how it is helping people and the amount of aid that is going there and the help that this aid is doing. This is all very positive.

I am glad for any good the LDS Church does in the world and for all the people it makes happy.

But this doesn't address the issue of why the LDS Church doesn't have pictures of happy black members in full faith and fellowship throughout its history.

If happy black Mormons are good now, why weren't they good fifty years ago?

And, more to the point of this thread, if Mormon women prophesied, received revelation, and healed by the laying on of hands at the inception of the LDS Church, why do they not today?

All the Best!

Your comment helps to bring the entire issue into focus, LJ, and I appreciate that.

Using your argument that the LDS prophet has ready access to the mind of God, why is it that blacks could not hold the priesthood in the Mormon Church from Brigham Young to Spencer Kimball?

If God uses his prophet to reveal his will, why is it LDS women are treated as second class citizens?

If Heavenly Mother were giving daily revelation to the prophet, do you think the message would be the same? Do you think a prophetess would be leading the Church?

Do you think Heavenly Mother holds the priesthood?

I have lots of questions, but these should suffice for the present.

All the Best!

just me wrote:What a wonderful conversation!

I have no advice as I really don't even know what I am doing. LOL

I think the important part is that you have broken the ice and hopefully she will feel that you are a safe person she can talk to about her beliefs and feelings.

Amen!

And, Consig, I LOVE your quote of, "we're everywhere...working from within". That is truly classic!

This is basically the same conversation I have had with my kids.

A+!!!!

They were also well known for the common practice of glossolalia and the interpretation there of.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

My view on this...and again, this may just be my blasphemous gospel according to Liz...is that God only reveals to men what they are ready to receive. I think that God understands that he made mistakes, and is hoping that his children do a better job. Isn't that what we, as parents hope and do?

Who is to say that when hubby and I have our turn to organize worlds, we can't do things differently? Who says that we can't establish the priesthood for both men and women on our worlds? Who says that both Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother can't be mentioned as equal deities? We just have to do our best to get to that point.

I suppose that is how I have managed to relegate things. It may be all wrong, who knows?

why me wrote:The question eventually comes down to the Book of Mormon. Is it true or not?
Not really. There are other sects besides COJCOLDS that believe in the Book of Mormon, sects that are not misogynistic as COJCOLDS is.

I honestly believe that they will again. Whether it happens in the next 50 years, or it happens in the Millenium, it will happen. I don't believe that it was ever meant to be taken away from women. Joseph Smith established the Relief Society to be an equal organization to the Priesthood. Brigham Young, who thought women were inferior to men, re-vamped Relief Society as an auxiliary. It was also his racism which caused the ban on blacks to exist in the first place. He has a lot to answer for.
