Can someone remind me why the modern garment bottom needs to go to the knee? I would understand why maybe teenagers in school with dress codes, etc. should have this requirement but why should adults have to wear an undergarment that goes down that far?
Is the reason:
A. To ensure that a symbol sewn into the fabric gets placed near the knee
B. To ensure that adults don't go gallavanting around showing the shape of their thighs to other adults and innocent children
I'm thinking the answer is B, but I'm not totally sure.
Thanks,
Zee.

Why Garments to the knee?

Well, when they shortened them, they made them as short as they could without relocating the knee symbol. But yes, I'm sure a rather socially-retarded (I use that word in its original sense, not as a reference to the disabled) idea of modesty also comes into play.

Varicose veins.
It's really for all our benefit. Personally, I appreciated that most of the GA's wore long socks as well as crossed their legs european style - all to avoid showing pasty white, veiny shins during conference.

How about this type of official statement from COB:
O that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth...
"If you think you look good in a higher hemline and you are older than 30 or married, please consider buying our mini-garment bottoms, which allow for some exposure to the thigh area."
