Sorry about the length-- I've had this on the brain lately.

What a great post! I can relate to much of what you have posted. My large extended family has shown nothing but love to me throughout our lives but the continue to let me know how important they feel the church is. We get along great as a result.

My father has issued me the same type of challenge your in-laws did regarding reading the Book of Mormon though no quite so ostentatiously. I accepted his offer with the condition that he read a book of my choice (I chose Rough Stone Rolling). We had many great conversations about both books and grew closer as a result. I actually enjoyed my last reading of the Book of Mormon more than I thought I would. My margin notes were quite different from those I had made some thirty years ago.

Your advice is good, although I think it common for Mormons to put on the mask of who they think they are supposed to be, which usually comes with a second identical mask they try to force on the face of anybody who is different.

Angsty's in-laws come to mind . . .

Thank you so much for sharing that experience, Angsty. I can understand your choice of board name!

I agree with you that the best thing we can do is be respectful of others beliefs, even (and especially) when held by those related to us, and listen to what they have to say, agree with as much as we can, and just understand the rest.

I think my daughter was surprised that I hold identical views to hers and was willing to share them with her when asked.

At bottom, life has taught me it is much more important to be a good person than it is to be an active Mormon.

Please know there are lots of people who totally get where you are coming from and think you are taking the high road by granting to your in-laws the freedom of belief they seem to want to deny you.

It seems that god is a racist when he proclaimed the jews the chosen race. That made him a racist and the palestinians are still feeling this racism to this day.

I'm glad you are finally coming up to speed on this, Why Me.

My understanding is that, when Jehovah proclaimed Israel his chosen people, it was in contrast to the 69 other gods over the 69 other nations, each of whom proclaimed their respective nation as chosen, too.

The church works and it is successful. I don't see women as second class members at all. And I would guess that most don't.

Slavery worked and was successful, too. Your point being . . . ?

Your wife should open her mouth and in a polite way ask the women members what they think. It would be interesting to hear the answers.

You do recognize that your continued insistence that my wife should ask women members what they think is sexist on two counts, don't you?

Perhaps you could ask a few yourself if you weren't in Mass during sacrament meeting.

There are two churches with the priesthood: the LDS and the catholic church. Both churches need women and the priesthood.

The only reason the LDS Church needs women is to breed more priesthood holders.

One of my favorite defenses of the Church is, "Oh, yeah? Well the Bible is wrong, too!"

No, but since god chose the jews are the chosen people, he became a racist. And the palestinians are suffering their fate at the hands of the chosen people. Many EVs are in favor of settlements etc because they consider that land on the west bank jewish land based on the Bible. So, it seems that god is a racist. In fact, his racism is throughout the old testament. And Christ in the Bible only visited the jews.

Oh, so racism is acceptable, because the ancient Hebrews ascribed that trait to their tribal god.

And I think it is self-explanatory that the United States should base its foreign policy on the self-serving mythology of Bronze Age shepherds.
