Personally, I think BrianH is frustrated with TBM posters and their arguments.

What do they say -- "know your audience".

Funny how such a strong attitude can instantly turn allies into foes.

Hopefully he will settle down, or is indeed simply an Evangelist fulfilling his requirement to cry repentance to the Mormons and quickly disappears like they tend to do.

They (Evangelist, yes as a whole, every single one of them, hehe) have a limited attention span after the first ambush battle has been won. Victory! on-ward to the next battle, with truth and justice on their side.

I don't think BrianH is a bad guy. I spent a little time in past at CARM.....it wore me out. BrianH, I believe posts there or I am very mistaken. He is very knowledgeable, in my opinion. I don't think he was Mormon, that is my uneducated opinion, I attribute that to some lapses in tolerance and a few gaps in his understanding of what it is like to be Mormon, past or present.

I just feel he has been posting for a long time and is frustrated. I understand your description of him on an Evan Crusade, my terminology. I got to a frustrated point several times and took several "rests" of various time spans. The end result is I am not the same poster I was one year ago or 2 or 3 or ....7 or 8 years ago. Brian is a prolific poster, if I have him pegged correctly, perhaps he needs a rest.

But for the purpose of this thread I would like know Brian's story....straight from him. I am all ears.

I have no idea whether he's a "bad guy" or not, but his posts here seem misguided and rather bigoted. It's telling that everyone from believers to the worst kind of apostate (me) finds his posts offensive and unhelpful.

Agreed. He is, in all likelihood, frustrated because TBM’s and Evangelicals both use the same playbook--circular arguments, special pleading, emotional appeals, etc. And yes, the mind games and the bovine scatology do indeed get very tiresome.

Though, you’d think that after thirty years he would’ve have learned that you simply can’t harangue some people into changing their point of view.

Interesting how we spend so much time online, and establish relationships with people unknown. Seems a human trait, that we tend to want to bond if there is no reason for defense or war.

I hope your right, and I hope that BrainH might consider that Liz's intention of this thread (if I know her like I think I do) is to invite and to give an opening for BrianH to expose a bit of himself to us, not to expose weakness but as an invitation to this "dysfunction internet family".

Brian, drop the sword and take up the invite, stick around and take a rest. This dysfunctional family can be quick to forget (we've all put our foot in it before), or merciless to the stubborn.

Please do share.

Runtu, I guess bad guy was not a good term. I am not trying to defend his post I was just trying to point out I do think that his style comes from posting at CARM. His style seems .... well, more common there. That is part of why it wore me out and I no longer go there. That style of posting doesn't get the scrutiny there like it does here, in fact I think it is promoted or at least allowed. CARM seems to protect posters like Brian and is about a mirror image of moderating that the MAD board moderates and protects.

As far as it goes there are a lot of posts here that are offensive and unhelpful...many I started and participated in.....hopefully all in the past. I hope Brian comes back and speaks for himself. I changed, anyone can.

Runtu, I really do take exception to one thing you said because I am the worst kind of apostate.

I think some would disagree with you about who is the worst of the worst. No one beats the "two-faced king of anti-Mormon mockery." Honestly, it kind of makes me feel better to know that the people who really do think I'm evil are generally the least appealing and most mean-spirited people I know.

I know, things get rough around here, and I am certainly not sinless in terms of being offensive and unhelpful. I just think he ought to take a deep breath and then post with a little less of the combative and polemic approach.

I posted on CARM for, I think, two or three days. That place is definitely harsh. They said I was "too Mormon" and "not Christian enough." I soon realized that, at least over there, you have to be on either side of a stark divide, and that means you can't concede anything to the other side. I hope we're better than that here, but sometimes we are not (myself included).

Runtu is like a canary in a mine shaft for alerting to something being very wrong on this board. Other than way back, with Will, this is the first time I've seen the warning.

You're a good man Runtu! and also, knock off the apostate crap … a more fitting analogy/title would be disciple, which Trump's all.

Brian,

You say that you've been debating Mormons for thirty years. My question is simply this.

Why?
Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.

The criticism of BrianH is, indeed, rich. Around here, one is normally praised for any disgusting, vile, condescending, pugnacious, filthy, and repugnant post as it is the height of free speech. Yet here comes BrianH, with some hard questions couched in much milder terms and suddenly you have standards?

Amazing.
