Andrea Yates--Insuring her kids go to heaven?

Post by _sock puppet »

All 5 of Andrea Yates' children that she drowned in the tub on June 20, 2001 were under age 8.

Does that guarantee that each will go to the CK?

Was Andrea Yates' sacrifice of her own salvation for that of her children worth it?

The answer to the first question would seem to be yes from the LDS point of view, at least if the material I recall reading on this subject is accurate.

If I was LDS, I would say that only Andrea Yates knows the answer to the second question.

As myself, I can only way that if Ms Yates did this act in order to ensure the supposed salvation of her children, then that would be a very sad consequence of a strong belief in a religious doctrine in a person whose mental state was in all likelihood abnormal.

But of course we can never know .

No. But it's an interesting proposition, according to Mormon doctrine you can guarantee the salvation of your children by sacrificing your own.

Yep.

Was Andrea Yates' sacrifice of her own salvation for that of her children worth it?

In fact there was a case in Kennewick Washington (in 1979, I think) wherein a young Mormon mother did throw her two young children off a bridge over the Columbia River in the middle of winter to ensure that they went to the Celestial Kingdom.

This incident was written up by Ann Rule in her book entitled "No Regrets Crime Fles #11". The name of this story is "To Save Their Souls".

We lived in Kennewick at the time this happened. This woman was in our Stake.

So BCSpace, let me get this straight.

According to LDS Doctrine, if I really wanted to be absolutely certain that my children inherited the CK, I could simply drown them before they reached the age of eight.

If the Celestial Kingdom is as glorious and desirable as Mormons claim, and if I felt that I would not be worthy to enter the CK anyway, would it not be the ultimate act of love and selfless sacrifice to simply murder my kids before they reached the age of eight?

Actually, you need not answering this. I already know what the answer is, because as described above, our entire Stake got the opportunity to consider this question very carefully - sort of up close and personal.

The answer is YES. You are right. Mormons who want to make sure that their children reach the CK can be assured of them doing so if they arrange for them to die before they reach the age of eight.

A most wonderful and glorious teaching reflective of a loving God who has the best interests of his children at heart. Right?

Honestly, I find this to be one of the most offensive doctrines that a religion could possibly come up with. It has bothered me ever since the Mormon mother in Kennewick sent her kids to the CK by way of the ice chocked Columbia River.

Yes and thereby accomplished an act of salvation for the children that even Jesus couldn't.
Without her sacrifice they may have ended up in a lesser kingdom. They may have even gone to hell if she had let then live. Also, did she give up more than Jesus who is after all by now an extremely blissful God? Sounds like a good deal in the end.

Andrea gave up everything! Forever! What a sacrifice.

I assume there are many cases where children have been killed by parents for what they viewed at the time to be in the best interest of the child. None of these likely being to gain anything but relief from some incredible mortal pain.

I can only hope that any thoughts for doing this for the sole purpose of sending them to heaven were way down the line from the real causes of pain that lead to even contemplating this solution.

I think this is a tacky thread.

This thread makes me uncomfortable as well. I think this is a thread that illustrates quite nicely the unintended consequences, internal inconsistencies and absolutely ridiculous conclusions and outcomes one is lead to when they choose to follow a make-it-up-as-you-go-along religion.

Can't make any money treasure hunting?
Make up a story about the ultimate treasure find - gold plates.

Can't get your plagiarized book published?
No problem- Use it to start a new religion.

Wife catches you having a roll in the hay with a teenager?
No problem- Make up a new commandment about marrying other women and top it off with an angel and a flaming sword for dramatic effect.

Racist?
No problem - Make it a policy that no blacks can have the priesthood, and anyone marrying a black will be executed (that ought to do it).

Seen as a racist when racism is no longer socially acceptable?
No problem- Reverse the policy.

I think this thread needs to be carefully considered by those who think that the LDS Church was founded and is lead by honest and truthful men, let alone a supernatural and omniscient being.
