Wow, Ms. Zee posted on MDB!

Hi Ms. Zee. :)

I would like to take a moment to challenge the author's concept of pretty. First, let's visit Fiji in the 19th century.
Image
I would consider these two Fiji women to be pretty. I'm not so sure what the author would think. The problem is, the author would look at this image and focus on a single aspect and declare, "This is inappropriate! Kids, look away!" he would miss the fact that the arrangement of their attire is not just pretty, but I would say, beautiful. Can you imagine the color? Amazing.

My guess is, that the author feels this is pretty:

I can agree with that but I'm not sure I would limit my definition to that single style and culture.

Yours in adoration,

Mr. Zee.

Welcome Ms. Zee!!!!! I really enjoy Mr. Zee's posts and look forward to more from you also.

I have long learned not to respond to questions like "Does this dress make me look hot?". The correct answers to questions like that are to mumble incoherently and pretend my hearing is bad.

Carry on.

Well, I don't know about other women, but I just adore having a strange man tell me what it means to be a woman. Not only that, but to actually call out specific REAL LIFE women! Now that is class, my friends.

I like the term beautiful much more than pretty or hot.

I especially enjoyed reading the comments of MsJack, Zee and sethpayne.

The article gives us some insight into how this man thinks about women. Loved this gem, "Something to be used up and thrown out." And is he only addressing children, because he keeps saying "girls."

The comment section is simultaneously disheartening and encouraging.

And for men: what happened to handsome? Now we hear hot, hunk etc. And what is the connotation? Sex? Handsome is more toward admiration for the man's looks

And then there's the really old-fashioned term: Toothsome.

My wife doesn't like to be regarded as (or called) "pretty."

The way she explains it, she thinks "pretty" refers only to surface appearance often augmented with hairstyles and/or makeup.

She sees "beauty" as coming from within.

It's just the way she has come to view the words and what they describe.

Who's that pretty girl in that mirror there?
What mirror, where?

No kidding. And yet he completely misses that everything he is talking about and blaming on women (and "women's lib") are historically male standards of feminine attractiveness. Look at this statement:

Once upon a time, women wanted to project an innocence.

When was this? When did women collectively want to be seen as "innocent?" Innocent of what?

"Innocence" was socially prized as an attribute of womanhood as part of the Victorian "Angel of the Hearth" mythology. And it was equated with "ignorance" and dovetailed quite nicely with the way that women and children both shared the same status as legal incompetents. Of course, such innocent womanhood was only the natural attribute of "true women:" those of the domestic middle classes and never assumed to be part of the nature of the "lower classes" who were, as the old saying went, "no better than they should be."

Or what about this?

Of course men play a role in this as well, but women should know better and they once did. Once upon a time you would hear girls talk about kind of women men date and the kind they marry. You don’t hear things like that anymore.

Women did not invent the patriarchal double standard, even if they had to live with its consequences.

Archbold is also succumbing to belief in the Madonna–whore dichotomy, where ‘pretty’ is Madonna and ‘hot’ is whore.

How delightful to see the better half of Mr. Z posting here!

When I was a young boy just starting to notice girls, the word hot was only used to reference temperature. Pretty was the word I used when talking about attractive girls. Later in life (my twenties) "hot" started to be used to describe things that were "cool". Opposites that meant the same thing. Then, "totally hot" ("valley girl" influence?) became the term that replaced "way cool".

The wonderful thing about English is the way it evolves. "Homely" used to be a compliment.

"Hot" works for me just as well as "pretty". Maybe better because what I meant when I said pretty in the old days might be better defined by "hot" (sexually attractive).

The author of the article may be stuck in his childhood.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.
