Good New Year To All:

I read somewhere that Sidney Rigdon sealed everyone to everyone in his NEW CHURCH somewhere in Indiana, I think, after the Mormons slighted him for Prophet. This shines an ignored light upon the notion of sealing and what exactly was the intent of it. Were they simply 'friending' one another?
And now I saw this:

A few questions I beg of thee:
1. How many people, both male and female, were adopted to Joseph Smith?
2. How many of Joseph Smith supposed wives were in fact adopted daughters? (do the records state "sealed" or "married"?)
3. Exactly how sympathetic to sealing was Emma Smith?
4. How many were sealed to Joseph after he was dead?
5. Was Joseph merely sealing friends in what is being interpreted as polyandry?
6. Is this Jane Manning James story legit? Sealed as a servant for all eternity?

Is this the dropping of the other shoe or just another bone to gnaw?

And this interpretation makes it seem like salvation was having someone in your family sealed to Joseph Smith. Is this what Sidney Rigdon was selling too?

In a revelation to Newel K. Whitney in 1842, the Lord declared
that, by entering into the new relationships formed through Joseph
Smith’s sealings, Whitney would attain “immortality and eternal life”
for himself and for all his “house both old and young because of the lin-
eage of my Preasthood saith the Lord. it shall be upon you and upon
your Children after you from generation to generation.”
By having a member of his family sealed to Smith’s family—joining the cosmologi-
cal priesthood—Whitney became part of the structure of heaven.

This reference is cited as saying that 30 wives were sealed to Joseph Smith posthumously.

Is there any record kept of Joseph Smith sealing or adopting before temple records?

Some say Joseph did not do adoptions. How is it that Emma offered adoption to Ms James who lived with them?

I was hoping Uncle Dale might fill us in on the Sidney Rigdon sealing his entire congregation to one another. The article Fence Sitter suggested is loaded with concepts few, me included, have never considered.

adoption. . . . I know President Young it is a great thing for an unworthy
saint to ask at the hands of the highest authority on Earth & if you
think it too great a condecention for you to accept of me in your
Family, then place me if you please in the Family & under the guarding
care of Amasa Lyman.46

From this you see the current anxiety of the Nauvoo period saint wanting a great saint
to guarantee them a glorious resurrection. I think this mindset says a lot of the whys and wherefores of the adolescent rampage of sealing in early Mormonism.

Jonathan Stapley's article that Fence Sitter suggested is yielding hit after hit of hitherto unknown by me insights into Brigham Young.

!. Brigham Young was not a true saint. He never got the gospel right. It makes great sense but I never would have believed it until I read his own incompetent words. He got fully messed up in Adam/God to the point that he thought all men are born the sons of God and have their name written in the Lamb's Book of Life and the gospel is needed to KEEP it there and not have it blotted out. What a crackpot!

2. Sealing was taken to multilevel kingship where 'tribute' was due whomever ruled over you. Yes, that means money is paid to those ahead of you in the Celestial Amway invented by Brigham Young. After preaching such nonsense he collapsed and was thought to have possibly died. While resting he had a visitation by way of a dream from Joseph Smith who informed him to cool it on the adoptions and to simply teach the people to get and keep the Spirit and that would lead them right and would see to it that everything gets organized as it should be eventually.

That is the same manifestation that President Taylor and I even think Woodruff each receive by way of Joseph Smith to try and get the Church back on track. Brigham was not able to do anything but organized the priesthood as it is today. Nothing was done to correct the spiritual error of not getting and keeping the Spirit as the PRIME DIRECTIVE of the Church.

3. It would seem that those clans that refused to give up on polygamy where possibly those who made the AMWAY way work well and got rich. That is why they kept on it. FOLLOWWWWW the MONEY.

I never thought it was THAT bad. But God gave them strong delusion because they did not receive the gospel and were not adept at teaching people how to get it and keep it. Nobody has anything to say about the OP?
