I'm doing some improv myself. These are things that I've had in my mind for years, but have never really worked out.

Yes, but what the ideas are surely makes it easier or harder to sustain the sense of legitimacy. All of us, whether we like it or not, are living inside that imaginary, and it's in us. Part of what interests me here is not so much dealing with a hostile group as maintaining one's faith against the secular presuppositions one has internalized.

I don't think it's easy to believe the stories told by Homer; like it or not, the hostile crowd is you.

Thanks for keeping the conversation going. Unfortunately. I don't get much of this in real life. Not that I really look for it.

Hans,

Two of my greatest struggles as a grad student were to let go of confirmation bias and to stop being selective in what I see. Being selective and confirming our bias brings great comfort. This, I think might at least partially answer the question of why people maintain faith against the secular presuppositions one has internalized.

Yeah I think you are right about me being the hostile crowd. That said, I can foresee problems ahead if I choose to advertise my new "beliefs" to my TBM friends and family. That would be a nightmare!

Zee.
