update to the TRI - Garments

Post by _zeezrom »

Thanks to John Dehlin.

http://mormonstories.org/other/TRI%20Qu ... 120911.pdf

This following quote is to be read during the TRI:
"Wearing the garment is the sacred privilege of those who have taken upon themselves the covenants of the temple. The garment is a reminder of these covenants and, when properly worn, will
serve as a protection against temptation and evil. It is expected that members will wear the garment both night and day according to covenants made in the temple. Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing, even when such clothing may be generally accepted. The garment should not be removed, either entirely or partially, to work in the yard or for other activities that can reasonably be done with the garment worn properly beneath the clothing.

Members who have made covenants in the temple should be guided by the Holy Spirit to answer for themselves personal questions about
wearing the garment. These sacred covenants are between the member and the Lord, and the proper wearing of the garment is an outward expression of an inner commitment to follow the Savior Jesus Christ."
Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

Awesome. Maybe they should come out with a picture book for the temple preparation class and all the temple initiates.

I propose the following change be made to the quote:

Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing, even when such clothing may look beautiful, adorable, or alluring. The garment should not be removed, either entirely or partially, to work in the yard or for other activities that can reasonably be done with the garment worn properly beneath the clothing.

No big deal. There's nothing strange about telling adults how to wear their underwear. Nothing intrusive and bizarre about that at all.

This talk of wearing garments reminds me of back when I was a dance major in the early 1980's. I had an old-school teacher who walked with a cane from having destroyed his hips in his youth from too much ballet.

He had recently left his position as director of the American Ballet Theater to come and teach in his twilight years at the university I attended.

He fondly recollected to me one day of a young and virile Mormon danseur he had known some decades before who would come to class in customary tight clothing.

My teacher could still remember the interesting little marks he had above each nipple that showed through his t-shirt.

All the Best!

OMG! I am shocked he didn't get called on that. Many studios forbid the wearing of underthings beneath the leotard and tights. LMAO

No, no...nothing controlling and oppressive about telling people what undies to wear and how to wear them.

And people wonder why Mormonism is perceived as bizarre and not mainstream.

Where exactly in the temple does one covenant to wear the garments? It has been a while since I've done a washing and anointing, but I know it is not an explicit covenant in the endowment.
It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener at war.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

You don't.

You receive the instruction to wear them at the end of initiatory.

But, hey, technically in the endowment you promise to do anything and everything you are ever asked to do...so, maybe it is the same thing.
