Agreed. The homosexual issue is an issue for Boy Scouts, not for Cub Scouts.

Excuse my ignorance, I never really participated in scouting besides a year or two in elementary school. But this organization appears to be hell bent on maintaining the barring of agnostics, atheists, and GLBTs.

For instance, say a boy is unsure about whether there is a God or not does he deserve to be excluded?

By the terms of the BSA constitution he HAS to believe in God to be able to join in the programme.

A choice is a choice. The BSA is indeed an esoteric organization and one does not have to join if one does not accept the rules and conditions.

Do it your way. Screw their rules. If they don't like the way you do it, then they will release you.

DarkHelmet wrote:Of course you don't have to accept any calling, but as far as church callings go, Cub Scouts is probably the best non-churchy calling out there. There is no doctrinal discussion. No campouts like in Boy Scouts, which can turn into Book of Mormon fireside discussions. You meet for an hour a week and help them earn their advancements in things like Sports, Science, Arts, Citizenship, Athletics. It can be fun and completely non religious. And there is no homophobia badge, so you don't even have to bring it up.

Exactly.

I've been participating in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts since my son turned eight, and it has been a lot of fun. And in all the meetings and training I've been to, not once have I ever heard a word uttered about homosexuality or atheism. It may be an issue in some areas, or when an openly gay adult wants to be a leader, but I've never seen it (obviously because the LDS context for LDS troops negates those two issues quite handily.)

I firmly believe that the boys deserve a well-run program, administered by trained, dedicated adults, so if you're not willing to do it "right" (and get trained), I would encourage you not to accept. There is a certain degree of dedication, energy and silliness involved in Cub Scouts, and if you can't deliver all three, the boys miss out on a lot. But if you can, everyone can have a lot of fun and you can look back on your years in Scouting with great fondness.

And how's this for an activity? Years ago, the Fashion Institute of Design Management in Downtown Los Angeles had an exhibit with Star Wars costumes and props. So I took the Cub Scouts down and we got to have our pictures taken in their replica X-wing (which the general public wasn't allowed to do). That was a memorable activity!

The cub scouts and boy scouts don't actually care if your an atheist or even if you're gay.
If you believe in the scouts, and keep your other views and behaviors to yourself, then no one actually cares.

Despite the "letter of the law", both the scouts and the Church strive to follow the "spirit" of the law. The letter of the law is only enforced if there is an actual problem or issue, such as a scout preaching atheism or his "gayness".

Having a belief system that is contrary to other beliefs is not "prejudice". It's simply different beliefs. Prejudice has a specific behavior and ideological pattern behind it, which crosses into bigotry and immorality.

I really wish anti-mormons and liberals would stop misrepresenting the truth.

Actually, cub scouts is not the worst calling in the ward.

Oh wait... yes it is.

I liked Nursery better. Heck, I like Bulletin Lady the best!
