bu2b,
Were I assigned to give such a talk (an unlikley event indeed) I would organize it around the theme of "Families First". This is an important concept that used to be taught by the LDS Church, but now more and more seems to have fallen to second place behind pray, pay and obey.
The family unit in which young children are protected and cared for and which older children can count on as an anchor and base as they move out into the world on their own, is absolutely critical to a healthy society.
This can be the traditional family unit, but can also be comprised of people to are willing to take on the various roles that are necessary to accomplish the function of a family in society and to fulfill those roles with mutual love, respect, tolerance, and understanding.
Some of the statements that Church leaders have made about those who leave the Church tend to undermine the the integrity of the family unit.
I would talk about how important it is for Church members to realize that when they are judgmental and show disrespect or even distain for those who have left the Church or become inactive, their actions can serve to damage the family and cause needless harm to others.
I also agree with the earlier suggestion not to quote GAs on this issue. Their revelations on such matters tend to have a short shelf life.
by the way: Welcome to the board.
Any ideas for giving a talk on families in church tomorrow?

I found this: http://www.LDS.org/scriptures/gs/family?lang=eng
I haven't looked in the topical guide yet though.

Your extended family, friends as you have mentioned ... and forefathers (avoid foremothers of course) all all possible sources of very interesting and inspirational sources.
I also recommend this line of inquiry: you could start with your own biological family and then move on to all the other families you are part of, redefining and enlarging the concept as you move on. You can then end with the idea that we are all family, i.e., God's children.
I think such a talk would have enough tradition in it to satisfy those who want it, but also allow you to express some of your own thinking.

Without hesitation, I do indeed! (And have for a long time now)

Agreed!
Compassion, support, understanding, love, and the simple common courtesy to extend (and indeed create) an enviornment where mutual respect, and a degree of space is required, for us all to truly gain a glimpse into the variety of differing journeys/experiences that our fellow human beings just might be willing to share with/for us on these discussion boards.
Peace,
Ceeboo

Hi.
Don't worry at all about ending before 10 minutes are up. Everyone appreciates brevity.

This is especially appreciated when the church schedule has sacrament meeting last. Sometimes they will let you out early. But when the church schedule has sacrament meeting first usually a member of the bishopric will run out the clock.

I have seen them run out the clock many times when Sacrament is the last meeting.

I really, really like that idea. I'm definitely going to incorporate that into my talk somehow. Thanks!
And sacrament meeting is first for me, by the way.
