Purposeful obfuscation may have been a better word.

radex wrote:In other words, you can't find anything from the church that supports your assertion that the church's official position on the civil rights movement differed from its apostle Ezra Taft Benson's position. By the way, are you meaning to imply that Benson's position on civil rights contradicted Mormon scripture? Or is Mormon scripture in harmony with Benson's position on civil rights?

I don't need to, young man, I've got this.

Ah, yes, the unsigned press release. Talk about obfuscation. Your anonymous press release does not answer the question. If the church had a different position on the civil rights movement than its apostle Ezra Taft Benson, it seems it would not be difficult to let us know what it was. Why the need to refer us to the scriptures or a press release on the church web site, neither one of which answers the question?

Edited to add: thanks for calling me "young man." That made my day, lol.

The Mayan languages (alternatively: Maya languages)[1] form a language family spoken in Mesoamerica and northern Central America. Mayan languages are spoken by at least 6 million indigenous Maya, primarily in Guatemala, Mexico, Belize and Honduras. In 1996, Guatemala formally recognized 21 Mayan languages by name,[2] and Mexico recognizes eight more.[3]

From Wikipedia:
The Maya script, also known as Maya glyphs or Maya hieroglyphs, is the writing system of the Maya civilization of Mesoamerica. Presently the only Mesoamerican writing system that has been substantially deciphered, the earliest inscriptions found which are identifiably Maya date to the 3rd century BCE in San Bartolo, Guatemala.[1][2] Writing was in continuous use until shortly after the arrival of the conquistadors in the 16th century CE (and even later in isolated areas such as Tayasal).
Maya writing used logograms complemented by a set of syllabic glyphs, somewhat similar in function to modern Japanese writing. Maya writing was called "hieroglyphics" or hieroglyphs by early European explorers of the 18th and 19th centuries who did not understand it but found its general appearance reminiscent of Egyptian hieroglyphs, to which the Maya writing system is not at all related.
Although most Mayan languages utilize the Latin alphabet, Maya writing is still used and taught in some Maya speaking areas of Mexico where it has received official support and promotion by the Mexican government and is taught in universities and public schools in Mayan speaking areas.

Think about looking it up before posting.
Quasi, you've got your facts wrong and that is a poor cut-and-paste job. Modern-day Maya do not speak, read or write Ancient Mayan, the language that is written on the Stela and inscriptions that have been found. You make it sound like they still do, which is quite inaccurate. I'm surprised you even put forward the idea quite frankly.

lol, Radex.

I read to "A single statement made by a single leader on a single occasion often represents a personal, though well-considered, opinion, but is not meant to be officially binding for the whole Church."

...stopped and laughed, then read on to discover that the church has officially endorsed the idea that a condition of binding doctrine would be if all church authorities believed it.

I stopped and laughed, again, to post this.

In fact, the more I read... the more a train wreck excuse it is.

Tobin wrote:Look at it this way. Moses, or any prophet, is still a man and not God. Men are flawed, biased, imperfect creatures. How do you know what comes from the man is merely his opinion or truth from God? The only answer is because what the man claims is from God must be given a 2nd witness as to its veracity. If the man speaks the truth, then God should be able to confirm that to us. Otherwise, do not believe it. I view all such statements from men (whether written or spoken) should be filtered this way. Quotes from so-and-so do not impress me. Magic sayings from magic books do not impress me. I'm only impressed by the truth and if it helps me better understand the world, how I should behave towards others, or by giving me better insight into the mind of God.

Why do you need two witnesses if one of them is God?

Dear Equality:

I feel that I should clarify that I do not believe you are a liar, just that you told some fibs earlier.

Now then, the "unsigned" press release was from the official new outlet of the church. It was not anonymous.

And who wrote the press release that was from the official news outlet? Thomas Monson? Or a mid-level church bureaucrat? Or a church committee? Mike Otterson? Do you not think it odd that a church supposedly led by a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator establishes what is and what isn't doctrine through a PR organ? Why wouldn't the Big 15 sign the document?

Gadianton wrote:Utah O,

Let me get this straight: You've found the only true church on the face of the whole earth whereby a man can be saved, you're about to join this church and move into its headquarters to begin the life of a Saint, and your opening post on this board is to ask advice on how to deal with people in other states who rub you the wrong way?

Who cares?

You're about to receive the one true baptism by the only valid priesthood authority in the world. And you're what, trying to figure out what you're going to tell some guy walking the streets of Austin with a bullhorn when you go back there to visit someday?

The LDS Church should send out Missionaries with bullhorns shouting out:

Temple Marriage Saves!!!
