He was also a governor's son in 1968 so probably not just another missionary.

Perhaps its a similar story as:

Mary Jo Kopechne: Teddy what if I am pregnant?

Teddy: Don't worry we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Dr. Cam,

The story about Romney's car accident is available on the net in a number of places. Mitt Romney was the driver of the car that contained 6 people among whom was the mission president and his wife. The latter, as you noted, died from injuries sustained in the accident.

A biographer recently discussed this among other incidents on NPR, in case you are interested: http://www.npr.org/2012/01/19/145449506/who-exactly-is-the-real-romney

You'll have to listen to the story as it's not included in the snippets of text on the webpage.

He wasn't alone If I recall correctly.
The Mission President was also in the car.

But the Republican presidential hopeful spent a significant portion of his 30-month mission in a Paris mansion described by fellow American missionaries to The Daily Telegraph as “palace”. It featured stained glass windows, chandeliers, and an extensive art collection. It was staffed by two servants – a Spanish chef and a houseboy.

Before and after his missionary deferment, Romney also received nearly three years of deferments for his academic studies.

Oh, get off his back already.

He explained four years ago why none of his sons chose military service. He said they were serving their country by working to get him elected president. Indeed, what higher calling is there? They are able to serve both their country and their church at the same time!

And to top it off, they are each having to make do on a piddling yearly salary of one million dollars (tax free) as compensation for their patriotic sacrifice.

Less than 1% of Americans ever serve in the military, so I'm not sure what's the point of asking, with heavy insinuation, whether a given politico (or their family) is serving/has served. Most people will answer no. We have operated an all-volunteer force for like the last 30 or 40 years, and most people simply aren't interested, willing, or qualified.

If he's talking smack about the military and hasn't served then it's game on, but if his only provocation is he's running for president, I don't really agree with this line of criticism.

ps: I really dislike Romney a lot, and the longer and nastier this Republitard primary drags on, the greater this dislike is becoming. I almost want to pray and sacrifice to the Flying Spaghetti Monster than Rick Santorum or Newt win the nomination, just to ensure someone completely unelectable faces Obama in the Fall.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

My guess is that several participants on the MDD board would tell you this was not unusual accomodations for missionaries and that they too had similar experiences.

I have no idea why this question was asked of Brother Willard in the previous campaign. All I heard was his amusing response.

I gather from his voting record and policies he's a Hawk. I think if you're a politcian and you're going to exercise deadly force through political measures then you have an obligation to have experienced the sacrifice people make when placed in harm's way. Clearly we can see what a disaster it is when you have an unqualified and protected President decide to waste our treasurey and spill our blood on a nonsense foreign war.
