Runtu,
If it any consolation. Mad does not represent humanity, but rather a small and deluded sub section of humanity. Proof of this is when they try to have "serious academic" discussion on the growth of imaginary populations and the only way it works ie to introduce other existing populations into the mix. Then they try to justify the mental gymnastics with Book of Mormon passages. How any one can try to engage in the academic discussion of populations that have repeatedly failed to manifest themselves is beyond me.
Just realize that they are hell bent on thier journey of academic mental masturbation and let them have their fun, climbing to eminence in their own very very small self affirming peer group.
Standing on the shoulders of dwarves who stand on an infinite column of turtles......
How can anyone take those folks over there seriously?

I think they're getting a little prickly with all the media attention proxy baptisms are getting lately. For years and years we have listened to the apologists explain that there is nothing weird about proxy baptisms, and the Jews should not be offended. Now that proxy baptisms are on the public's radar with the Romney candidacy, and the apologetic spin isn't working, they are getting frustrated.

How hard would it be to create and populate a sql db with names and dob's of people not to be added as new records? Fairly easy. If the name birthday and death date match someone on the do not add list, then do not add the new record. I could code and test it in a couple of hours, and I am sure there are groups that would gladly produce the data set. Heck you could also throw in some regex pattern matching for common variations on the names.

As it is we have members who will change a name slightly to resubmit. If a member feels passionate about doing the proxy work for a certain person it is easy enough to do it. Just make one tiny change and voila!

Not to hard to catch typos and variations on the names. I could code it in a few hours.

I assumed something like that is what the church had in mind when they made a promise to stop baptising holocaust victims. How did they plan to keep the promise? They have a lot of technology in place for gathering and indexing names, why not use technology to filter out improper names? Maybe they had their fingers crossed when they made the promise so it doesn't count.

Except that there are lots of people who have lived who have had the same name or a slightly vaired name. Then what? I'm clueless about this stuff.
The church is working on some things to fix some of these problems, so I've been told. I just am unaware of what the fixes are right now. Also, not heard anything about prevention of certain names being done.

Use more than just names and variations on a name. Add in date of birth, date of death, place of birth, father's name, mother's name and variations on those names and you will fairly well identify an individual.

Cool. Clearly that is what should be done since it is possible.
