Dead Dunking and Baby Baptising.

Post by _Spurven Ten Sing »

In the churches around these parts most babies are baptized and a name is given to them. Mormonism teaches infant baptism to be an abomination, but why? The idea is that babies are not old enough to join any church and so cannot be judged, etc.

Yet Mormons have no concept of Christianity and how baptism works. Sure a baby is baptized, but the ordinance is not valid until confirmed. Confirmation is usually around 13 years, when the child is better able to judge the validity of the baptism.

So, an ordinance if performed that the child later chooses to accept or reject. This is identical to dead dunking in the church. Mormons baptize a non-Mo and he or she chooses to accept or reject the baptism later. It's the same.

It's all stupid.

I think you will find that the great majority of mainstream churches that baptize infants hold that the infant is fully and irrevocably baptized by that act.

In some infant baptizing churches there may be an event in later life (usually in adolescence) where the person's status as an adult believer is celebrated ('first communion', 'confirmation' etc.), and at that time one may state that one takes on the responsibilities first assumed by one's godparents or sponsors at baptism, but that is not essential to the full redemptive power of the baptism being in effect.

What I find interesting is that an 8 year old, by Mormon standards, is old enough to understand what baptism means.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

And a 12 year old boy has the authority to preside over his mother if his father is absent.
