Especially because Romney will be running against a black man. If Romney pulls ahead in the polls, I would not put it past the democratic machine to pull the race card. The church's priesthood ban, and statements made by BYU professors in 2012 trying to defend it, will stick out like the Ace of spades in the race card deck. I don't think Obama wants to play that card, but the party bosses and the Shaprtons and Jacksons would have no problem doing it.

Of all the presidential elections for the church to have a viable candidate, it had to be against a black guy.

Mark E Peterson is a goldmine for those purposes. "Apostle" is a strong claim, and having an LDS "Apostle" make those kinds of racist statements is going to stick in the public mind.

Romney can easily diffuse the issue by using Dr. Peterson's logic, which is. I don't know why God is racist, I just don't know why God does these things.
It is my province to teach to the Church what the doctrine is. It is your province to echo what I say or to remain silent.

Yep. That will go over well with the religious right, and any other God fearing american.

The church has issued a statement:

The positions attributed to BYU professor Randy Bott in a recent Washington Post article absolutely do not represent the teachings and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. BYU faculty members do not speak for the Church. It is unfortunate that the Church was not given a chance to respond to what others said.

The Church’s position is clear—we believe all people are God’s children and are equal in His eyes and in the Church. We do not tolerate racism in any form.

For a time in the Church there was a restriction on the priesthood for male members of African descent. It is not known precisely why, how, or when this restriction began in the Church but what is clear is that it ended decades ago. Some have attempted to explain the reason for this restriction but these attempts should be viewed as speculation and opinion, not doctrine. The Church is not bound by speculation or opinions given with limited understanding.

We condemn racism, including any and all past racism by individuals both inside and outside the Church.

This is a potentially very useful position.

It means that the Church itself can, an any time, claim that previous embarrassing doctrines were given with limited understanding and, by this principle, simply decide not to be bound by them or to take responsibility for them.

Brilliant.

Let me fix this.....

We do not currently tolerate racism in any form.

This was not racism.... Trust us. Makes a Jedi hand waving motion

We condemn racism, including any and all past racism by individuals both inside and outside the Church. Wait... What? Condemn past racism...... aren't we condemning ourselves and Brigham Young? (And Peterson, and dozens of others)

Fixed.

Is it just me, or are they crawling, millimeter by pained millimeter, toward an actual apology?

Does this look like an apology?
