2. Not have been divorced within the past five years, unless the divorce occurred before the member was baptized.

I wonder what rationale, if any, there is for this rule.

Both would be better off and get closer to God by serving their fellow man instead and stopping all this non-sense at this point. It certainly wouldn't hurt; it might cause people to think better of the Church; and I don't think people would be complaining about their dearly departed being baptized.
It's a huge difference. And if you were Mormon, you'd know that.
Oh, I am Mormon and I find the modern industrial amusement ride called temple work a perversion of what God wants. The temples are completly distorted right now. The should be a place of joy, music, discussion, learning, and reflection. It should be open to everyone to experience and reflect on God. IF the people involved spent any time reflecting on the life of the person the work was being done for and really honored their life, I might be more understanding towards it. Right now it is just the ticket they have to punch to get on the ride. I bet few if any of them remember the name (or even care who the person was) that they just went through for.

I would also aim a criticism at those that work there. They would get far closer to God by serving in soup kitchens and helping those in need than anything they currently do by serving in the temple.

Pure capriciousness?

Probably something along the lines as getting a divorce demonstrates an unwillingness to honor temple covenants and reflects poorly upon the church. It is all about pr and image any more.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

But then people would not have to pay tithing to get there, and that would never do.

Well, the way this is worded makes it sound like divorce is a sin. Always. Baptism, natch, washes away the sin of divorce. Otherwise, it takes a 5 year repentance process to fully recover...
