Yeah, I found his statement odd.

“I have been asked by the Church to forward their response and endorse it. In order to be obedient, that will be the extent of my comment.”

The standard reply from a man Bott's age would be something like, "I cannot comment at this time." or "The church issues a statement, and I endorse it." Why did he need to tell the world that he is obedient to his superiors. It sounds strange for a grown man to say that in a professional setting.

And he partially threw himself under the bus by saying the he had done something to be "obedient," which is a back-handed slap at his employer. What's the deal, does he lack free will?

His free will is under contract ... its ironically called the "Honor Code".

This also strikes me as unbelievably strange, especially for a man who is a university professor.

Perhaps there is a tiny particle of rebellion in this statement? As Dark Helmet pointed out, Bott could have phrased the statement differently but chose not to, which would be surprising because his job and church standing are potentially on the line. Maybe he wanted people to know that he was being "obedient" and not issuing this statement by choice?

How is it a slap at his employer to say he's obedient? Obedience is the first law of heaven, according to Mormon doctrine (or is it Mormon folklore or Mormon speculation? Perhaps a statement from President Newsroom clarifying that point will be forthcoming.). And are you suggesting that obedience and free will are mutually exclusive? Seems an odd position to take as a faithful Mormon.
