Forget about the posthumous baptism kerfluffle and the priesthood ban whatnot.
On the one hand, a lot more people are hearing the word "Lamanites" for the first time.
On the other hand, those people are likely to trust the Smithsonian Museum when it comes to matters of Native American archaeology and anthropology...

A number of people I work with were rather shocked about the proxy baptisms of Jewish people. One who is Jewish was highly offended by it and he told me so. We talked about it for about 20 minutes. So your observation above may not be totally accurate.
