There doesn't seem to be a lot of room for prophetic utterances from the Big 15 these days.

Events in the future? Way too risky. And given the size of the investment portfolio, it might lead to an insider trading investigation if any of the predictions got lucky.

Events in the past that aren't already in the historical record? Been there, done that. Don't want to saddle up that tapir again.

Stuff about other stars and planets? That Space Patrol stuff has gone about as far as it can go.

Translations of ancient documents? Kinda pointless with all those BYU professors already on the payroll.

Pointing out more stuff that the members should do or not do? Heck, is there anything left?

Health and grooming tips -- maybe a Word of Wisdom II? Nah. You can't credibly choke up while talking about stuff like triglycerides.

Fashion advice? Well, nobody seemed too happy when the Brethren announced what God wants people to wear while mowing their lawns.

I'm betting the next things we hear are that families are good, porn is bad, and everyone should keep doing what they're already doing except more of it.

So, Thomas S. Monson has been prophet for over 4 years at this point. And yet, no one in my wife's class could name a single thing he has taught. If he doesn't say anything for 4 years, it seems to me that having a prophet isn't all that important. If having modern day revelation is so important, why in the course of 4 years has not Monson said anything other than that which you can read in an average "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book?

TSM has taught the Gospel as we are to know it which is essentially the definition of prophecy (Rev 19:10)

I find it comforting that the claim of authority held by the modern LDS Church rests on its self-referentialism.

So you're saying TSM is a prophet in the same sense as Sister Johnson, Orem 5th ward Sunbeams teacher?

Right.
I haven't been a believer for over twenty years now, so I've forgotten much of the content of the D & C. It seems to me though that it was/is a few parts administrative, a few parts restated biblical "thou shalts"...and a couple of actual relevant revelations.

I'm curious as to what people here think would be a relevant -to our times- revelations that a latter day prophet should/could/aughtta pronounce? I'm not talking explaining LGT, Adam,God or other controversies....But information a group could actually use to best prepare for...whatever.

Say, Energy drinks are now a part of the WoW. Food storage is/isn't required because of imminent apocalypse. Dolphins are sentient and are now worthy of baptism. Things like that.

That and more. Does sister Johnson establish doctrine or does she teach established doctrine to her Sunbeams?

When the FP comes out and claims something is a doctrine of the church, and the apologists here say it is not, then it's safe to say the answer to your question is yes.
