Arthur Patton, from the WW2 story that keeps changing.

LOL!

I'm drawing a blank over "PattonGate." Will you please refresh my memory?

Also, can we reasonably add "BottGate" to that list?

BottGate is BlackGate but I like your name for it better.

Arthur Patton, as pointed out, is a character in one of Monsons tall tales from his past relationships with widows, related at Conference. He has told it twice and neither version matches the other telling nor the actual available facts. Arthur Patton was the son of a widow that Monson knew.

He stated unequivocally during one Conference retelling that "Arthur Patton died quickly."

Nobody, including the family, has any idea how, when, where or indeed if, Arthur Patton died during WW2. The only record shows him not returning from shore leave of some description due to some misdemeanor or mischief.

There is a thread about this somewhere on this forum, I think I started it!

So, what exactly is a spiritual rudder, if you don't mind?

It is that which determines the course for our Ship of Saints. Face one direction and you can change the course to another direction. Face straight on and the ship will proceed ahead.

If we proceed with this metaphor, it might lead to someone designated as the spiritual anchor who can bring all progress to a halt.

"It determines our course..."

But what if we want to determine that on our own?

What if our struggle isn't direction but rather motivation to head in the direction we've determined?

Spiritual oars?

Looks like bcspace would have sat dumbfounded along with the rest of the class. If I'd been there, I think I probably would have cited the very important revelation that Sacrament meeting speakers should refrain from asking the congregation to follow along in their scriptures when the speaker refers to a specific scripture verse. Who can doubt the prophetic sagacity of Tommy Boy when he serves up such pearls?

Monson's one and only achievement so far has been getting Prop 8 passed. Didn't turn out like he hoped, though.

Good luck, bcspace, coming up with some specific teaching from Monson that couldn't have come from Sister Johnson's sunbeams class.

Yup, it was in Celestial If I recall correctly.

And there were discrepancies between the versions large enough to make it clear that from Monson's point of view, what matters in a sermon is that it sounds good and isn't too much trouble to write, not that it is factually accurate.

Monson is just a placeholder, God's queuing up BKP for some of that old time fire and brimstone scolding of mankind.

God, I hope BKP gets to be the prophet. Imagine the mass apostasy.

Okay, now that's some serious schadenfreude.
