Some of the happiest married couples I know are mixed ethnicity and religion. Take my in-laws, for example. He's a Mexican Catholic and she's a white atheist. Problems only arise when one spouse has beliefs that keep them close minded, which reminds me of something that a bishop told me not too long before I stopped believing in Mormonism. He told me that to keep an open mind is dangerous because "all sorts of ideas could get in there." This and them warning me about the danger of my extensive knowledge of the gospel is a big part of what led me away from the church.

Even though it has been only 30+ years since god felt it necessary to lift the priesthood "ban", surely there must be a dozen or so blacks in the church leadership by now.

You are right about the Democrat vote. If Romney is nominated, the african-american clergy will be using the religion card every chance they get to help support obama.

You are right and you made a good post. The LDS church does have some black heavy weights that will come out and defend the LDS church against the black clergy. In the end, it will be good for the LDS church.

Liz, so if your white American daughter pitches up with a black Slavic Mormon with whom she is very much in love are you going to counsel her about the dangers of marrying someone of a different racial background generally? (the advice doesn't mention culture, i think you are just speculating that this might be what it means because it becomes more palatable that way).

If he's a lot smarter than she is will you counsel them about the dangers of marrying someone of a differing intellect level?

If he's a lot richer than she are you going to counsel them about the dangers of mixed marriages in terms of economic status?

Actually my white American daughter is dating a black American young man, and they are quite serious. I wouldn't be surprised if they get married after she graduates from college next year. He is a wonderful young man, and would make an incredible son-in-law. My husband and I both love him, and hope the relationship lasts.

They do, however, have more things in common than differences. They both attend the same college, and have similar interests and friends. My belief is that you attract the type of person you are. If you want to marry someone smart, study. If you want to marry someone successful, work on your own success.

The bigger problem is old white guys in Utah injecting themselves into very personal and private decisions, such as who a person should fall in love with and marry, and it is all based on their white-american-utah upbringing.

What do you think is going to have a greater influence on a child's life?

Hopefully B. The problem comes when the parents take their marching orders from the old guys in SLC. Parents who are familiar with the YM/YW manuals may object to interracial dating simply because of the counsel from the brethren in the current YM/YW manual. I believe those parents are in the minority (i hope they are).

Actually, the advice is "we recommend that you marry someone of the same racial, social, and economic background generally, and always the same religion."

Just to nitpick, the exact quote is

"We recommend that people marry those who are of the same racial background generally, and of somewhat the same economic and social and educational background (some of those are not an absolute necessity, but preferred), and above all, the same religious background, without question”

The racial issue is listed as a separate issue from economic, social, and educational, and is given more emphasis (The same racial background vs. somewhat the same economic, social, and educational). It was from a quote from Spencer W. Kimball from the 70s. It is very outdated in 2012 and should be junked. Interracial marriage isn't an issue today like it was in the 70s. Marriage is an important decision, and different backgrounds can make it more difficult, and these are issues that should be discussed with each other, parents, and other trusted sources (not old guys they've never met).
