I'm going to turn this discussion back to Jersey. My apologies to both of you for interrupting Jersey's fun.

I realize she does not anything negative by it's use, and that many see it as acceptable, but I think I still have a point which I would hope people can understand. I linked a good article about it.

I wasn't offended. I would hope you can see why many might be. It really shouldn't be that hard, and it is a little surprising that it is still around today, but then many still do use negro not meaning anything bad.

Actually, it doesn't. It was a multi-cultural term that was completely acceptable in the 90's and even today in the USA. Nothing racist in it all.

Church spokesman responding to Illinois' apology to the LDS:

The resolution states that the "biases and prejudices of a less-enlightened age in the history of the state of Illinois caused untold hardship and trauma for the community of Latter-day Saints by the distrust, violence and inhospitable actions of a dark time in our past . . . ."

It also describes members of the LDS Church as "a people of faith and hard work" and asks them to forgive "the misguided efforts of our citizens, chief executive and the General Assembly in the expulsion of their Mormon ancestors" from Nauvoo.
A spokesman for the LDS Church, Dale Bills, called the resolution "a thoughtful gesture" and said the church will have more to say about the apology next week. President Hinckley and Walker are scheduled to hold a press conference with the Illinois officials on April 7.

"I think it brings closure," the governor said Wednesday from Vancouver, British Columbia, where she is on a trade mission. "It was certainly a very generous gesture on their part to realize historically they had really driven a whole group of people out of their state.

"Now they're saying they're sorry it happened. I think it does bring a great deal of friendship and, at least for me, warm feelings about Illinois that they would care that much and pass this resolution."

Hinckley referring to both the Illinois and Missouri apology:

We are pleased to note that on April 1 of this year, the Illinois House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution of regret for the forced expulsion of our people from Nauvoo in 1846. This magnanimous gesture may be coupled with action taken by then Governor Christopher S. Bond of Missouri, who in 1976 revoked the cruel and unconstitutional extermination order issued against our people by Governor Lilburn W. Boggs in 1838.

These and other developments represent a most significant change of attitude toward the Latter-day Saints.

It seems the LDS like receiving apologies for past injuries from people who didn't have anything to do with the actions and they even find them beneficial. They just refuse to issue any of their own.

I was searching for any evidence of an apology to blacks from the church. All I could find was this

LDS Church Apologizes for Past Missteps
From the Deseret News:

In a surprising move, the head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today has publically apologized for some of the Utah based church's past missteps.

In a written statement, President Thomas S. Monson, the head of the LDS church mentioned a deep regret for Brigham Young and other leaders' pronouncements about blacks and those with African ancestry. In his words, "These statements are offensive and cannot be taken in any other manner. We renounce what was said as not doctrinal and apologize for any confusion or offense the racist statements or policies may have caused."

The press release also announces a transition so adult women may now be granted the priesthood; the possibility for leadership within the LDS organization. Women and church members have long requested this access, but were rebuffed by traditional and chauvinist policies.

The guidelines given to the lay clergy, the bishops and stake presidents (known as the church handbook of instructions) will be published on the LDS.org website. All LDS members will now have access to these guidelines and become aware of previously secret guidelines and policies. LDS weddings will still be held in temples, but anyone who wants to attend those ceremonies will be allowed, without a special recommend.

President Monson references a forthcoming document that will detail the expenses and earnings of the LDS church throughout the world. This document will be made public, so each ward congregation will see where their tithing funds are being spent. Prior to today, this information was not public and even individual members had not been aware of how their donations were being used. President Monson also announces his own retirement, and the recommended retirement of any LDS leader over the age of 65. "For too long, we have allowed people to stay in the leadership when a younger, more diverse population would help the LDS church move into the twenty first century".

The statement reverses the official LDS position opposing same-sex marriage. "We regret our participation in this battle for human rights. As of today, we agree to cease any official sponsorship of anti-gay causes and encourage our members to prayerfully ponder their own participation in such causes."

It appears that as of today, April first, the church will be reviewing its policies towards women and gays, modifying existing teaching materials and pamphlets to vigilantly oppose discrimination based on race, gender, creed or sexual orientation.

The press release mentions that the Book of Mormon will become a spiritual guide instead of historically documented fact. It reads: "We acknowledge that the Book of Mormon was inspired by God, but no evidence has been found that the peoples described in the book were real or in fact ancestors of native americans".

Finally, the statement expresses regret that any historians or members of the LDS church were excommunicated over some of these issues. "These members will be welcomed back into the fold if they so choose. All members should feel free to research and study any all issues and come to their own conclusions without fear of familial, social or spiritual reprocussions".

In a related note, the Utah LDS church has agreed to allow reporters, historians and scholars unrestricted access to all the church archives and documents.

I wouldn't expect you to understand, and I did link and article that shows what I think is wrong with it's use. I have already said many use it just like many did with negro, and that she did not mean anything racist by it.

So, you think the agenda is to make the church look 'bad'.

Why me, they are pretty good at doing that all by themselves, which is a great pity. I've been absolutely amazed at the recent newsroom articles which are lies, pure and simple.

They can't get away with it. Not in this day and age. They need to come clean in my opinion. Either be proud of what you are and your doctrines and beliefs or change them, but don't lie and mislead the public because it will come back and bite you. Be honest. For goodness sake Why me, this is what the Church taught me!

By the way, John Sweeney is an excellent investigative reporter. I trust that he will be balanced, but I believe he will be absolutely honest.

I have no idea what issues he will be covering. It doesn't give any detail in the link. Fingers crossed.
