In the early 1990's she gave her diploma back to BYU in protest of their treatment of professors.

Oh, how courageous! How noble! How daring! How correct in that a feminist, critical theory, academic leftist kind of way!

After receiving her doctorate in English from UCLA, she decided she no longer felt comfortable attending church because of her disgust with the way Mormon leadership aggressively campaigned against same-sex marriage.

She left the Church here. She's in abject apostasy here as to fundamental, essential doctrine that has vast implications, both spiritually and culturally.

But she has returned to activity now.

What about her positions on homosexual marriage?

Brooks’s “loving criticism” of her church doesn’t sit well with some Mormons. "BYU poli-sci professor and blogger Ralph Hancock is one of her most vocal critics." On his Bulwark blog, he often questions Brooks’s “Mormonism” because of her liberalism, feminism, and stance on gay rights.

I don't know Hancock, but he clearly actually understands LDS doctrine and what Brooks is attempting to do with it and how she is attempting to position herself in the public eye as a "faithful" and "believing" Mormon (and a "national voice on Mormon life and politics) when in actuality she is a leftist cafeteria Mormon with little actual connection at a deep level to its core tenets.

If you are correct, then she is clearly a great danger to Christ's True Church, and the Brethren will act to ensure that she is either silenced or excommunicated.

But if that does not happen, I wonder what that will mean, in view of all the open wickedness she is practicing in plain sight, no doubt to the shipwreck of many tender testimonies?

I learned to conceive of God as both male and female, Mother and Father.

What she appears to be saying here is not that there is a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother, but that God is an androgyne, a being both male and female.

I like Brooks, but I believe the Bretheren see her as a rebel. Ten years ago she would have been sanctioned a la September Six. Now, they can't afford the negative publicity this type of reprimanding would bring. Her views and opinions are clearly not in the mainstream of Mormonism and if the membership majority thought the same stuff like Prop 8 would have caused internal uproar (more than it did).

Fair play to her for putting her (slightly) controversial and left of centre testimony out there for all to see, including the paid clergy...

This is not what Brooks appears to be saying in her own text. She says there that God is both male and female, Father and Mother. "God" is singular, connoting a single entity or being, therefore, if God is both male and female, this implies that God contains within himself, or itself, both genders.

How can you suggest that the Brethren would shrink from doing what is right?

No, there must be some very good reason why they are not taking action against her, that is certain. Just remember: We Don't Know Why.
