I was doing some research and pondering of the Phaistos Disc tonight, which led me to a word:

Pseudoarcheology

Many attempts have been made at diciphering the disc. Some of the attempts have resulted in fanciful stories and wide ranging ideas. Apparently, many of these attempts are considered classic examples of Pseudoarcheology.

I suppose some of our canon also came about through this method as well.

Another one that also deals with the same topic, but is much more dated (1991) though a lot cheaper ($4.00 delivered on Amazon) is Fantastic Archaeology: The Wild Side of North American Prehistory http://www.amazon.com/Fantastic-Archaeology-North-American-Prehistory/dp/0812282388/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1332093591&sr=1-1 It also deal with Mormonism somewhat.
