Why is it so easy to dismiss the idea of Satan but not God? Why aren't believers (in God) out there saying, "Satan exists! I believe!"

I am generally inclined to believe in satan or satans. I think people build romantic images of satan which will be a disapppointement to any who make loving commitment to it.

I think the phrase the devil made me do has no place outside of cheap jokes.

But I was apologizing for distracting your question of male female images. I can think of many stylized images of satan, all male none serous. I pulled out art history texts, gothic art, no satan images. A world art history had a tempatioation of st anthony with devils of indeterminate sex and species, insectivorous. A couple of beauiful Giottos with no devils. I reviewed a fairly extensive set of reproduction from the Book of Hours, no devils. I can think of painting from that time where Death appears in the guise of black death. Perhaps that would be similar to modern images of Satan such as Guernica.

I think there are more romantic images of satan than any religious ones. Perhaps that is an outgrowth of suppressed sexuality fueling the witch hunt cult which grew out of control in the early modern historical period.

Thank you Huck, MCB, and the rest for your replies.

If we are going with religion, why not have opposing forces? Religion is dry without it.

Regarding the sex of Satan: it is yet another example of male-centric literature.

Obsession with gender is a Mormon thing. As a never-Mo, it never bothered me, even when surrounded by them. I guess that is why they attached a "GID" label on me. I still dream at night about nursing my babies.

Well don't forget Lilith. Sex incarnate and the first feminist.
It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener at war.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

"You seduced me!" "No, you seduced me!" No, YOU seduced ME!" No, YOU seduced ME!" No, YOU seduced ME!" No, YOU seduced ME!" .................

Change pronouns as the situation changes.

However, at the time of the Garden of Eden the terminology 'brother' was not known because we were all just spirit offspring from a central source and 'sex' was not a defining term until AFTER Satan had tempted Eve.

Sexual desire was not known until after Satan successfully beguiled Eve to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Gender, however, predated that, according to Genesis. Before being so beguiled, Adam was a man and Eve was a woman. Naked as they were, they just did not have sexual desire for one another.

Actually, that is according to the Mormon interpretation. Is there anything in the actual Bible that states that Adam and Eve did not "know" each other before the fall? It is true that Eve didn't become pregnant until afterward, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't have sex. What the Bible says is that they were not ashamed of their nakedness until after the fall.
