I am abandoning polygamy. Today I received a letter from a bishop I have never met informing me that my ex wife is seeking a temple cancellation.

Soon I will no longer practice spiritual wivery.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

I'm not. Going into divorce I/we had $75k in savings. Coming out $0. Best $75K I ever spent.

What is your hypothesis then, if HOJ is not it? What would cause you to worry about whether or not Joseph Smith fathered any children from his other wives?

As usual you have nothing. I predict you will mention the lack of DNA evidence disproving 'horny ole Joe' again in the near future as if it were "the critic's argument".

The assumptions being made here is that the female is dependent on the man, thus when times are good she would prefer a "lower-ranking" man to a high status man but when times are rough (like when Obama is in charge of the country) women might prefer to share a rich dude.

The entire premise is destroyed if we were to see women as either financially equal or superior to men (as is quickly becoming the case). Might we then expect that women might gravitate to men based on factors such as health and intelligence? Or will they finally just date otehr women once males are no longer richer than them? Even then several women might decide to have a man in the group marriage for an occasional heterosexual encounter or as a sperm donor/father. It is not out of the realm of possibilities.

Why polygamy?

It made adultery and fornication in Nauvoo 'acceptable' to what was supposed to be a people organized as a religion.

What prevented BY from taking care of older widows without 'marrying' them as extra, polygamous wives? Was charity to other than one's wife forbidden by Utah territorial law? Was it against LDS mores to help out a widow? (if so, what changed by the time TSM was helping older widows in his neighborhood growing up and in home teaching? Was he breaking a Utah law or Mormon rule by helping them, without having married them as is the BY excuse for polygamy marriages?)

If it wasn't for a present, physical aspect to the relationships, and this was the 'new and everlasting covenant', then why did the LDS Church abandon sealing in this life single women as extra W's to a H, with the provision that they are not H and W in this life (so as not to violate civil law), but their marriage will kick in once both have died?

Polygamy is simply a euphemism for extra marital sex--something JSJr obviously regretted later having inserted prohibitions of into the Book of Mormon text.

Exactly.

Also, it seems to me that the crux of the LDS argument for polygamy is that it is an eternal principal....It is a fundamental property of existence. God(s) require many mates to populate his personal planets. This scenario though just seems sooo full of holes....God lives in the CK on a physical planet, (an earth celestialized by his dad) in a physical body, eats, drinks, owns power tools....has billions of houses with a wife in each, to raise his approx 150 billion spirit children....all inside of space/time. On his days off, since he doesn't have any golf buddies nearby....as they all have their own planets....he tries to figure out what to do with all the extra males this system provides no wives for.

I assume you read that portion of the William McLellin papers wherein he wrote a letter to Joseph Smith III, telling him that Eliza R. Snow miscarried Joseph's child when Emma literally kicked her down the stairs of the Nauvoo House as she threw her out?

bcspace wrote:The fact that nothing has turned up after testing the prime suspects goes a long way towards eliminating the horny ol' Joe hypothesis.

No, that's not what happened. What happened was after eliminating some peripheral suspects as Joseph's progeny, everyone involved in the Joseph Smith DNA project suddenly went eerily silent when it came time to announce the results for Josephine Sessions and other prime suspects.
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"
