Shades,

You don't need this but just so you know; I support the way Mormon Discussions is operated and moderated. That is a compliment to you and to the other moderators who I believe do a good job of a thankless task.

You also have my appreciation for the investment you and the moderators personally put into creating an environment where I can outpour my feelings and questions about a religion (and have fun doing so) that doesn't afford me the same freedom. I have also been on the receiving end of moderating decisions and sanctions and rightly so. If I'm out of line with the rules of the board I deserve what I get.

If this sounds too sucky so what?

I have a great time here and the moderators and Shades in particular are the facilitators of that experience. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes that the team have to deal with, and nor should I know. But I do know the moderating team and Shades are reasonable human beings who do not make rash, I'll considered decisions.

I for one thank them for what they do.

Thanks for offering your perspective (I think I have already offered mine)

She told me, privately,

How classy of you to offer this private communication to the entire board. (Ohhhh, and in case you were wondering, she is unable to respond to your enormous courtesy)

I haven't known Jersey Girl as long as most of you, but in the short time I have known her, I get the sense she relishes conflict and likes to push buttons. And every time she acts out, well, that's just some Jersey sass on display; a neighbourhood toughie out for some fisticuffs and mayhem.

Very courageous of you!

If this were my board, I probably would have booted her for a good amount of time, too.

I know!

Permanently? I dunno. But a 3 month suspension would have been a minimum sentence.

You're getting a little soft.

Peace,
Ceeboo

I respect your decision and I regret saying anything on the matter. I'm sure it wasn't an easy choice. Thanks for giving us this board to use. I am in your debt.

Did Daniel Peterson take over your account?

If not, that is a wonderful impersonation.

I'm not sure of all what happened with Jersey Girl. I understand that she felt like her life had been threatened. I am asking for some transparency on this issue.

From what I understand to be the facts, I don't think Jersey deserves permanent ban.

With all due respect to Shades, this is the part of the whole thing that confuses me.

She told me, privately, she had sent a message to DreamHost reporting this board and told me that she had issued the same to Shades.

Do you all understand that, had she been successful, you'd all be floating out in the ether, disconnected from one another?

I think Jersey Girl knew perfectly well she was kicking the hornet's nest when she threatened to report the board to DreamHost. If this were my board, I probably would have booted her for a good amount of time, too. Permanently? I dunno. But a 3 month suspension would have been a minimum sentence.

Dr. Shades wrote:I apologize that I haven't been able to weigh in on this matter yet. Ever since the crack of dawn last Friday I've been afforded extremely little Internet time, and this state of affairs won't correct itself until at least Saturday, maybe even Monday.

In the meantime, you can all rest easy knowing that I decided to break character and violate my core principles by perma-banning (for now) a longtime poster for no reason whatsoever. Be assured that I took the action I did without any forethought at all. Rest easy knowing that I didn't agonize over the correct course of action for both the board itself and for the good of all the other posters here. Be at ease knowing that I utterly forgot that Jersey Girl is an Internet friend of mine from way back. You can also be satisfied that I neither consulted with my other moderators nor weighed each of their input with extreme gravity. You can also sleep easy knowing that I didn't spend way too much time during our recent "break" mentally agonizing over what to do about all this.

If you've been reading and/or participating here for any length of time, perhaps I have built up a certain "track record" in your mind regarding the way I moderate. Rest assured that whatever my track record is, I suddenly decided to go against it 180° because I woke up one morning and flipped a coin, since that's so much in character for me.

In short, yes, you're correct; Jersey Girl is pure as the driven snow while Dr. Shades is a nasty, arrogant bastard who routinely bans random people for no reason whatsoever, as you've all seen time and time again.

Ahh, customer satisfaction. It's what I live for.

Gee Shades rather if you are busy why not spend your time letting us know what is up rather than a cynical and satirical entire post on the matter.

Customer service indeed.

I think some of you are over estimating Shades’ interpersonal skills here.

She is hot-tempered and contentious. To what degree, I do not know. I do not stalk the internet looking for people I know here or elsewhere. In fact, I recently had a surprise.

Many of us are hot-tempered and contentious; we only differ in degree. It is up to Shades to make the call as to how far that incident crossed the line and whether it is likely to be repeated.
