Was the extermination order official doctrine?

Post by _DarkHelmet »

Mormons like to point out the extermination order as a way to discredit Governor Boggs, but I talked to some of his descendants, and they say the extermination order was just his opinion. It wasn't official doctrine. I asked them why he did it, and they said they don't know, but it was revoked in 1976, so all is good now.

It's not fair to judge Boggs because we don't know why he ordered it. It's not our place to speculate.

For all we know he was following the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

It was not bigotry because it was not based on being Mormon. It was based on where you were from.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

This is an excellent point. It was not religious persecution because Boggs was not opposed to their official doctrine. He was opposed to their non-doctrinal opinions and cultural Mormonism. Therefore, the extermination order was cultural persecution not religious, so it's OK.

: "I don't know that we teach it. I don't know that we emphasize it. I haven't heard it discussed for a long time in public discourse. I don't know. I don't know all the circumstances under which that statement was made. I understand the philosophical background behind it. But I don't know a lot about it and I don't know that others know a lot about it."
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

It seems Mormons in the 1800's were persecuted for things that the Church has since officially recounted.
