The FUTURE State of Deseret?

Post by _Carton »

I just got off the phone with an old friend, a TBM, who doesn't know that I'm a closet apostate. Because of a show I recently watched on the History Channel about "How the States Got Their Shapes," we got talking about "Deseret". He had some interesting things to say. Mainly, he predicted that, as things "start to go to hell in a handbasket in America," the Church will become the only stable government on the North American continent, and the original borders of Deseret will be reestablished and become the "place of refuge" for all the "good people" in America. He seems to believe that "The Priesthood" will become the acting government when that happens. He was the one who told me to look up "Mormon Corridor" in wikipedia. It is interesting that Mormons still are the strongest political power in "the Mormon cultural area" of the United States.

I thought this was a very interesting graphic from the wiki article:

Have any of you heard Mormons where you live talking about "Deseret" in a future sense?

Oh, he also was telling me about some secret gold mine that the Church has that supposedly has more gold in it than is currently held in the treasuries of all the countries on the earth! He said some people believe it contains all the gold from the ancient Jaredite and Nephite treasuries------like thousands of tons of pure gold!

Wow! I wish I knew where to find just a few gold bars from that cache! Surely they wouldn't miss just a few bars.

Yes, I've heard this delusional thinking before. Instead of focusing on being good kind "Christians", many TBMs focus on being insular, exclusionary, and embrace these "nutjob" end-of-the-world scenarios. They have this illusion about how correct the state of the Church (and state of the leadership) is and feel if only they could take over, they would set things right. I dread any day in which the current leadership of the Mormon Church takes over and it would be an unmitigated disaster.

Could you see your way clear to asking your friend to let Meldrum and Sorenson take a peep? Because they are currently digging up large tracts of the Western Hemisphere trying to find that stuff.

What do you think would happen?

Huh? I don't understand what you mean. Who is "digging up large tracts of the Western Hemisphere"? Do you mean there are really people out there looking for this allegedly secret gold mine?

I forgot to mention that my friend said the gold in the Salt Lake Temple came from this "secret" gold mine. I've never heard anything about that. Has anyone here ever heard of such a thing?

Not quite, but they are desperately searching for physical, tangible evidence of an archeological artefact nature that would support the opinion that Jaredites and Nephites existed outside of Joseph's imagination.

OK, I get what you mean now.

Another thing my friend mentioned was that, outside of Deseret, the rest of the country would be at war with each other, or something like that. And that anyone who wanted to escape the chaos in the rest of the country would have to "flee to Zion", meaning the future country of "Deseret".

I have only heard such crazy talk in the context of a gathering at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, NOT a future state of Deseret.
