Saw this on PostMo and had a chuckle. Looks like Joseph Smith has been included in a brief list of "Famous charlatans" on the Wikipedia.com entry for Charlatan.
I doubt it'll last long, so for the sake of posterity:
Brinkley the goat gland guy! Read about him in History of Radio class once upon a time. Classic. Someone once asked "What happened to the goat gland if it didn't heal impotence?"
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07
MASH quotes I peeked in the back [of the Bible] Frank, the Devil did it. I avoid church religiously. This isn't one of my sermons, I expect you to listen.

I thought this was great, and would like to see it go back up. As charlatans go, Smith surpassed Madoff long ago in terms of total dollar cost to society.
Among the relatively few things that religion does well, producing and sustaining charlatans is near the top of the list.
David Hume: "---Mistakes in philosophy are merely ridiculous, those in religion are dangerous."
DrW: "Mistakes in science are learning opportunities and are eventually corrected."

Placing the discovery of the Rosetta Stone AFTER the translation of the Book of Abraham throws an interesting light on the typical intelligence of those in the anti Mormon movement. Kinda like (If I recall correctly) lead plates under twenty years of bat guano and ON TOP of a 50 year old concrete pad.
~Those who benefit from the status quo always attribute inequities to the choices of the underdog.~Ann Crittenden ~The Goddess is not separate from the world-She is the world and all things in it.~

Who's the charlatan now?
Why do you think it's an important distinction?
