Translation: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH!

What's rather humorous here is that Orwell was speaking here - precisely - of the Left, not of modern conservatism (which did not yet exist when these words were written).

In a more modern context, and within the realm of the much more presently probable soft totalitarianism that is coming to the United States and has already fundamentally altered the U.K., Canada, and much of Western Europe, what we can say is that, for the Left:

1. Freedom is license

2. Personal responsibilities are rights

3. Ignorance is strength (the entire American public "education" system, the work, to a great extent, of John Dewey and his disciples, and the plaything of the American Left, is a gigantic program for the production of ignorance).

4. God is dead

5. Humans are god

5. The state is the holy temple of human gods

I was very much looking forward to David Bokovoy joining his considerable training and talents to the BYU Religion Department. I had hoped he would become one of the leaders of the department in the near future, and that first rate scholarship would be the hallmark of the department going forward. Regrettably, it now appears that first rate scholarship and a commitment to knowledge of "things as they really are" and "things as they really have been" is not truly a high priority for BYU and its religion department. This is a sad day for a university whose motto affirms that "the glory of God is intelligence."

Oh my, are the September Six about to become seven?

Looks like someone's toes got stepped on. Not enough "Reform" Mormons at BYU? Drain running slow? Sink clogged? Not enough political correctness in the church's flagship university?

She learns that in order for her faith to survive in a postmodern context, it must adapt to change and evolve. Using as an illustration her own spiritual journey from certainty, through doubt, to faith, Evans adds a unique perspective to the ongoing dialogue about postmodernism and the church that has so captivated the Christian community in recent years. In a changing cultural environment where new ideas threaten the safety and security of the faith, Evolving in Monkey Town is a fearlessly honest story of survival.

1. There is no such thing as a "postmodern context" unless one adopts, of one's own free will, such a perspective.

2. While I cannot speak for "Christianity" generally, there is no "ongoing dialogue about postmodernism and the church" within the LDS Church, and I predict their never shall be. Postmodernism is, without question, one of the most destructive and entropic intellectual fads ever to rise out of the contemporary humanities within Western academia; it is a part of the Great and Spacious Building (indeed, at this juncture, probably an integral part of its foundations), and Zion is going in the opposite direction, as with other aspects of Babylon, with all dispatch.

Postmodernism, as to its broad contours, is, at its core, irreconcilability opposed to central gospel truth claims. And indeed, for postmodern theory, there can be no such thing as "LDS truth claims" outside of, or beyond the socially constructed "truth" that any such church could be understood to posses as a manifestation of that church's embeddedness within the social/cultural/ideological environment from which all claims to "truth" are derived and developed.

Just to say "the Church is true," within a postmodern context is problematic because as truth can never be more than a derivative and ideologically conditioned epiphenomena of culture (and deeply interwoven with issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and the perspectives of the dominant class for whom any such "truth" may justify continuing dominance) The restored gospel's "discourse" can never itself stand existentially outside its own sociocultural base.

No real wiggle room here, I'm afraid.

Droopy bailed out of the homosexuality thread, too, after he was "CFR'ed" by multiple posters.

Droopy has bailed from more than one thread it appears. Perhaps he's planning his next move with Wade Englund?

This difference is profound and it makes me unbearably sad.

It's also the main complaint I have with our BYU employed Ace Apologist: he thinks he has nothing to learn, that he cannot gain anything of value from those he considers less than he. That he teaches, period... as if the rest of us are empty-headed fools who know so little as to be the ants he crushes beneath his feet.

It's all part of the BYU attitude, and it's very sad that it continues to put such a dark gray cloud over future generations.

Jesus is the head of the Church. He visits regularly with the Prophet, and has at the least laid his hands on the other 14 and anointed them as special witnesses to his name. The Church is the only true church on the face of the earth and has been restored in this last dispensation, by the prophet of the dispensation of the fullness of times. Might I emphasize fullness.

There is nothing new to see here. Why are you suggesting "study" as if to learn something new? The need for education to bring this fullness from Jesus' mouth to our ear seems plain to me.

I'm very disappointed in DB's unwillingness to jump on this gravy train … ummm I mean educational system.

Loran, define them how you may, but there is more than enough room within Mormonism for those who see the world differently than you do, including, I would add, for Joanna Brooks.

Moreover, I have a hard time understanding the condescension here. I have already explained my reasonings, and they have nothing to do with these issues. Since BYU has a religious education program, rather than a religious studies department, BYU doesn't teach my academic field, i.e. Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East.

There's no need to attribute evil to either me or the school. It shouldn't take too much empathy to realize that a person who has sacrificed considerable time and effort to pursue a speciality would want to put that speciality to use.

Too much glory.

Not enough intelligence.
