In LDS terms, it's called a mission, but it's anything but free.

So, was he literally called to serve a mission? Sorry for my ignorance. I haven't been keeping up.

Did Gee get a free trip to Europe for all this? Just curious because that would be very nice for Gee. I'd stay believing in the Book of Abraham for some free trips around the world too. ;)

I'm sure he's flying on BYU's dime. Which means the tithe payer's dime.

He probably feels entitled to it on some level. That is, I'm sure he thinks that, because he has had to endure so many butt-kickings, that he deserves to fly around the world on the Church's and BYU's nickle and dime. The same is probably true of people like Hamblin and DCP, too.

Not really, but he thinks so...he's connected with NAMIRS. They all think they are the Blues Brothers, 'on a mission from god'.

Gee said Chris contacted his receptionist, but the way I remembered it was his receptionist was on Chris' Facebook, read Chris's comment about the rumor, and then posted that she knew Gee was in Europe and had been asked by him to photocopy a bunch of pages related to the papyri, which was consistent with the rumor that Gee was in France to do work on his discovery. I just went to the original Facebook thread to see, and I notice that she has removed her comment from the discussion.

I could be wrong and maybe Chris did contact her, but I got the impression that she saw the thread and decided to throw in her own two cents, unsolicited.

I can confirm seeing this Facebook message. I saw that Chris made mention of Gee's European research and the receptionist/intern said she was photocopying a ton of material (800+ pages?).

Did Gee get to see Paris? God, how I would love to go there.

Maybe I could tell the Church I'm ready to investigate alternate garment designs and publish my work in Vogue Paris. All I need is airfare and a small stipend.

Incidentally, Chris visited Gee's office some time ago to apologize for any perceived offense. Gee responded by slamming the door in his (and Hauglid's) face.

I can't recall ever hearing this story. Is there a thread where this is discussed back when it happened?
