Droopy, you're the greatest prose stylist in the English language.
I thank God every night that we have the internet to preserve your words.

Doctor Scratch wrote:Yes, I do think it is evidence in favor of there being "factions," though I am as confused as ever as to where the various loyalties reside. If I recall correctly, Greg Smith's father-in-law is/was an area Seventy who is/was rather good friends with Elder Packer. This is peculiar, since I had been led to believe that Elder Packer was opposed to Maxwell Institute apologetics--that he was a more hard-line supporter of traditional LDS orthodoxy. (Which, if true, would explain why he would dislike someone like Dehlin.) So maybe the Mopologists are back in the good graces of "The Packer Faction"?
In any case, I'm hoping that Wiki Wonka, Scott Gordon, J Green, and all the others commence with their various silly jokes about how there could never possibly be anything such as an "Oaks Faction" or a "Packer Faction". Come on, guys: get crackin'. I'm sure those jokes are as funny and as richly satsifying as ever!
Of course it is silly to deny the existence of factions in any group of leaders such as this. Those who claim otherwise are engaging in sophistry unless they have drunk the koolaid of Quorum unity. In this case, however, we need to be sure to take into account the Romney campaign and the need to minimize bad press. That was probably the argument that carried the day regardless of factional conflict. The sad thing about Dr. P. is that he was unaware of the obvious fact that his timing on the Dehlin attack could not have been worse. Dehlin needs to be concerned about what happens after Romney loses.

By any chance would you be willing to share how it was that you learned about the Greg Smith hit-piece? I would assume that the people at the Maxwell Institute would have tried to keep this quiet.... So how did you find out about it? Perhaps you could send me a private message if you are uncomfortable saying such things on the board?
Can't. That would also betray confidences. Sorry, Scratch.
It is just a matter of time till someone tickles the ear of the powers that be and they actively go after John Dehlin. In fact, I was shocked that Grant Palmer lasted as long as he did. Of course, I'm sitting in the cheap seats as I write this safely (read cowardly) anonymous doing my good works and making my statements far from SLC and those that dislike honest discourse (read it gets them angry enough to have you booted from the Church) about Mormonism.
On an interesting side note, I also worked at Microsoft for several years before leaving. That place reminds me of Mormonism for some reason.

John,
Do you think that the General Authorities are aware of what gets said on the message boards?

My money says that he sits this one out (in terms of meaningfully engaging). Not much wriggle room here.
John,
In terms of this board, as you know, DCP left several months ago in frustration because he was being held to account for several of his lines of bs at the same time.
Certainly nobody expects him to show up here. But many of us (me included) are confident that he scans this board and reads what is written about him. (As he has demonstrated in this and other venues, even though most of what is written about him here is negative, he thrives on the notoriety.)
His love of seeing his name in "print" might lead him to surprise you.
