Sadly, the order that I see most TBM members adhering to is:
1. Church
2. Church
3. Church
4. Some other stuff if I get the time.

And that is not the church's fault but the people who make such a decision. And these people would be the most critical, abusive exmos if they left the church. The exlds internet discussion forums are full of such people.

And this is optional too. If there is a family problem or work problem or a health problem no problem in not going on a mission. Going on a mission is a free choice decision.

Hmmm...

Not according to the Aaronic Priesthood lesson titled 'Every Young Man Should Serve A Mission'...

Emphasize that through his prophets the Lord has commanded us to serve missions. We cannot escape that obligation any more than we can be exempt from paying tithing or from keeping any other of the Lord’s commandments.

I never saw the church leadership promoting family/jobs before church.

Did you ever hear them say, "Pay tithing if you have enough saved for retirement."

How about, "Magnify your callings if you have time."

?

the neglect of families due to time spent maintaining callings is excessive. If we eliminated shopping malls and actually paid folks for their tireless work within callings then I believe some other avenues will open up allotting for more time with the family. At this point, we have a fantastic guilt system suggesting if you do not spend all your time and money building the kingdom of God then you are going to be punished. Perhaps the punishment will be a tragic loss, guilt, feelings of depression and/or anxiety, a job loss, etc. But if you do not give all your time to building the kingdom, then if something bad happens in your life you only have yourself to blame. Fun.

Times have changed. The sad fact is: people have less free time these days. Between work becoming more time consuming and family time becoming more demanding and the idea that people must be occupied 24/7 has dented the time that one can spend with church things. How many people have enough free time to give to the family after a tiring day at work? And then the kids have a lot of hobbies occupying a lot Old Testament time during the week. One can magnify a calling when one has time to do so. But...no time...no magnifying.

Should is the key word. It doesn't say 'must'.

Having never been a Mormon or served a mission, you don't really know what it's like.

It is that you do consecrate yourselves, your time, talents, and everything with which the Lord has blessed you, or with which he may bless you, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for the building up of the kingdom of God on the earth and for the establishment of Zion.

Zee, I realize that you have me on ignore but you really must provide the reference. To place a quotation without quotation marks and then provide no reference is not a good way to post to such information.
