One night my daughter asked if she could get her ears pierced for the second time.

Little did I know, but she had a rare condition wherein she would bleed to death if she had a second piercing.

She has a major artery that somehow loops down and back up the earlobe. Apparently the first one missed it due to being dead center.

Nonetheless, I found this out later after fasting for 40 days and 41 nights.

What mess that would have made in the mall. Thank GOD for a prophet who counseled against a deadly second set of piercings!

Are there any examples of continuing revelation? What of major import has come out of the mouth of any recent LDS leader in recent years?

Our bishop sixteen years ago told my wife and I we really needed to adopt three young children; we did it largely out of faith that he was right. The best decision I ever made in my life was to marry my wife. The second best decision I ever made was adopting those three children.

Congrats, but it sounds like the second best decision in your life was made by your Bishop.

not to hijack the thread...but I heard recently from an acquaintance in Utah that not wearing a shirt while cutting the lawn is a problem. Meaning, leadership and members have issues with shirtless lawn mowing. I am talking about males, so relax.

Every time the church changes its doctrine, "continuing revelation" is used as cover.

For the most part, these changes have softened previous positions, so I'm pretty much in favor of them, even if they do tend to lag behind prevailing cultural norms by about 30 years or so.

So my life has been blessed in that I didn't have to deal with the nonsense that the generation before mine did, such as institutionalized racism, one-piece garments, teachings against birth control, and rules against shorts at BYU.

Maybe the generation after mine won't have to deal with the nonsense I did, like being asked about masturbation in worthiness interviews, or the punitive policies restricting temple wedding guests.

Isn't continuing revelation marvelous?

Umm, yeah that's a problem. In all my years in Utah, the only man I witnessed mowing the lawn shirtless was a dirty Catholic who drank beer on Saturday nights! He was such a nice man and I regret never talking to him though he lived next door.
