"Wishing everyone was like me"

Post by _zeezrom »

Would that bother you if someone said that to you?

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

New International Version (©1984)
I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

What is the cause of prejudice? Is it founded in a desire for others to be the same as you?

Zeezrom, I think Paul is poking a bit of fun at a demand for people to fit into a one for all mold. He is actually a somewhat nimble thinker.

I thought prejudice was a result of fear tied to lack of understanding of others. A second thought might be that that form may be the nice version.. There are versions of prejudice which result from the delight in taking advantage of people who are in a position of weakness. For example take people who were once slaves, they can be considered inferior in order to limit job and housing opportunities shaping them into a source of cheap labor.

Thanks Huck. Are you suggesting that Paul was being sarcastic?

Zeezrom, coming back to this I realize I misrembered the context of your quote. My comment is not so accurate. I realize it is the Corinthean discussion of marriage you were quoting. Paul is suggesting that he thinks it is best that people remain single. I cannot see sarcasm there. I just do not see any serious expectation that people will all be like him. In general I hear Paul as seeing peoples variety as natural and a good thing. Though good would not apply to each of all possible variety of actions in his view.

I thought you were presenting a possible reason for prejudice for our reflection. Reflecting I persented some alternatives. Likely prejudice as multiple sources

With Paul, do I have to admit that sometimes I see him nimble but on other occasions i think he runs on at the mouth a bit? I think he could have just skipped that, wish all be like him, comment.

Did he want everyone to be single and for humans to die off? Or just be single and have kids anyway...

Maybe he was thinking that the world was ending soon and that having babies wasn't important.

Interesting.

Aaaawww! (I say that just like in the song "home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes) Don't you just love that song? I don't buy very many but that sits up there with OK Go's "You're so damn hot".

Anyway, I'm ready to start an online clique whenever you are.

Just Me, I'm cursing tonight because I'm simply not very good. This is not like making pie crust!
