Are dicussion boards the best way to determine truth?
I find this board and other boards to be a good way of determining both sides of an argument. When people make claims and they back it up with references I can check those and it seems to me a good way to determine an opinion on the matter. Even though I have come to an opinion it may not be right and it could change as I see more evidence.
Is a discussion board a good way of determining truth?
What is the best way?
On the other hand a discussion board could be a awful way of determining truth. To me some poster post some things that are totally incorrect but they may present their post in such a way that is sounds logical.

A message board is a good way to open yourself up to other people's ideas and ways of thinking. They can also provide references to search out more about issues.

I think message boards and blogs have a limited amount of usefulness. They tend to be best at pointing out flaws with arguments. They are not the best ways to find positive arguments for things. Positive arguments tend to take lots of time and require lots writing to articulate, which blogs and message boards tend to suck at.
As for getting at the truth, there's no substitute for reading widely and thinking a lot. And by reading, I don't mean reading blog posts and message boards. Message boards still have a purpose even after you have done that. Once you have formed tentative conclusions based on reading and thinking, message boards are a good way of testing out what you have concluded. Put forward what you think and watch it get shot down. Or, look for people who have voiced similar conclusions and look at how they got shot down. If you think the refutations have validity, then you might want to reconsider your tentative conclusions. If you don't and can argue coherently why the refutations don't work, you have strengthened your case that your initial conclusions are correct.

Do you think his book made much money for him?
My Dad read his book after he gave it to me so it seemed to work for him to keep the faith. Although, my Dad didn't look at what the critics had to say he just think he know what they say based on what apologist tell him.

The best way to determine truth is to ask god with sincere intent.

The book put me a clinch and leveled a thai knee to my faith that left me dazed and about knocked out, eventually I got knocked out.
The book is terrible. Offers little substanative answers and is based on message board discussions. In the end it is my fault I did not innoculate myself with discussions on zelph, kinderhook plates, book of abraham, etc. Just as apologists have suggested: I should have known these issues before adulthood, worked pasted the issues, and retained my faith.

not neccessarily, I have numerous acqaintances that prayed, felt a reaction, had a metaphysical or spiritual experience and endured to the very end with little to no doubts. Whether their preceptions/experiences may be a different question deserving attention.

But what truth did any of it reveal? Can you come up with a single thing? That's the problem with it.lostindc wrote:not neccessarily, I have numerous acqaintances that prayed, felt a reaction, had a metaphysical or spiritual experience and endured to the very end with little to no doubts.
