The problem here is that whyme doesn't actually say anything here. He doesn't answer the question of why so many. Even if Joseph knew his time was soon at an end, he already had several wives, so why does he need to marry so many others? Did God give him a number?
by the way Just so whyme doesn't jump to his usual incorrect ideas, I am not suggesting Joseph was marrying so many at this time due to being horny. Sex certainly played a role, but I think at this time others reasons were at the forefront(not any idea that he was about to die).

I think that, again, this could be contributed to his misconception of the sealing ordinance. He was trying to seal as many people as he could to himself so that everyone he felt most connected with would receive exaltation.
why me wrote:That is not the question. Rather, why he married so many during a two year period. This is a bigger question. He became a man in a hurry and I don't think that he got a case of horny toad. Something else was going on.
A book that lends insight into the human psychology of sexual conquest is The Game by Neil Strauss. The book is about a secret underground society of "pickup artists." The pickup artists in the book are all recovered nerds who, through what is essentially an application of the scientific method, figure out what to say, how to act and what to do in order to--shall we say--be very popular with the ladies.
The book gives a couple of insights into the psych of guys who shag lots of women. First, the thrill is the conquest itself more than the sexual act. It's likely that Joseph Smith thought the most thrilling part of the whole thing was convincing a girl to marry him. Second, the book shows that once you get good at seducing chicks, it becomes addictive and you do it more and more frequently until you either burn out or the whole thing blows up. I think that is likely what happened to Joseph Smith.
It’s relatively easy to agree that only Homo sapiens can speak about things that don’t really exist, and believe six impossible things before breakfast. You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

Very interesting. This makes a lot of sense. I am intrigued by the book you mentioned. I will have to download it on iBooks, Kindle, or Nook.

I recommend the book. Strauss is an incredible writer, and the community of nerdy seductionists he describes is a fascinating topic. Be sure to return and report!

Unfortunately the evidence points to him being most connected to females, single or otherwise and kept this connection and altruistic desire that they be exalted from public view and from his wife.
The facts suggest he knew what he was doing was wrong, hence the secrecy.

Oh, I agree! I think that there were two issues happening here. The polygamy based on Joseph Smith's libido was definitely present. I am not denying that at all. But there was also, I believe, a confusion on his part about the sealing ordinance, which is why you do see men sealed to men, etc.

That might be true in the begining of Jos. Smith's trysts. On the otherhand I don't think that would be true for a creep like Warren Jeffs who used power to take what he wanted..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it. Nehor.. Nov 08, 2010

For clarity, Joseph Smith married women, girls and other men's wives. He, according to what we currently know, did not father any children by any of his polygamous/polyandrous wives - which means he disobeyed the direct commandment given as the reason for God allowing it in the first place "to multiply and replenish the earth".
