The Church Distribution Center has a DVD based on this book:

I wonder if there is a depiction, with appropriate jarring and tense music, of this special witness of the Lord Jesus Christ being confronted with undesirable minorities trick-or-treating in his neighborhood that is deteriorating by virtue of their presence. Think of how blessed some young African American or Latino members of the Church would be to re-enact this trying moment in the life of our prophet.

As of this post, then-Elder Monson's memoir is not available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lords-Errand-Memo ... 808&sr=8-2

I was trying to figure out where this quote came from and who dug it up in the first place.

It looks like Sandra Tanner dug it up in July 2010, and she says the book was in the UofU Marriott Library Special Collections. Makes me wonder how widespread of a publication it had.

I think by undesirable minorities he meant non members.......

Just remember the time and the place ;).

Sandra Tanner was given a notice that she was posting hate speech by Facebook when she posted it.

I would guess that in 1956 90% of the LDS people would be thought of as racist by today's standards. They had not yet be given the truth and light, so their state of savage innocence is a mitigating factor that should call for our forgiveness in the present.

Since minorities in Utah were very scant in 1956, the reference was probably to the immigrating Mormon families who were not Sons of the Pioneers eligible, or else gentiles.

Too bad god didn't select his elect, special witnesses from the 10%. But then, the Mormon god is probably counted among the racist 90% too.

How ironic. Pointing out someone's racist past is itself hate speech.

I don't think we are missing a lot by not being able to get this book from Amazon:

http://www.sltrib.com/LDS/ci_8105753

However, it does contain other gems, such as this one:
President [J. Reuben] Clark [Second Counselor to President David O. McKay], in his message [to us], suggested that a mission president should not, in response to questions, be embarrassed to say, "I don't know." He said, "We get in difficulty if we think we know all the answers." He then illustrated with an experience from his own life concerning a mission president who had brought an investigator to visit with President Clark, the investigator having about ten questions unanswered. To each question, President Clark had responded, "I don't know."

He then said, "Brother Monson, if a member of the First Presidency can answer don't know" to ten consecutive questions, a mission president should not hesitate to respond, I don't know.' He may then send the question to the First Presidency but should not be surprised if he receives an answer back that we don't know, either. There are many things that the Lord has not yet revealed to the First Presidency."

It seems that the wonderful "we don't know" tactic for dealing with all difficulties was grasped by the young Monson at a really early age. Just the right man to be a Living Prophet!

I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

If I were to guess I would say all of them.
And crawling on the planet's face
Some insects called the human race
Lost in time
And lost in space...and meaning

I wonder, which is the more egregious violation of societal ethics, Having a bias toward race, gender, sexual preference.....or Mormons?
Course, to answer that question, I, with the rest of you would have to turn in my computer and find something else to do for entertainment.
