Tim wrote:"In about 1956 we recognized that our neighborhood was deteriorating. We observed this one Halloween by the nature of the people who came in the guise of 'Trick or Treat.' The minority elements were moving into the area where we lived, and many of the old-time families had long since moved away. Seeking counsel, I visited with Mark E,. Petersen, who for many years had been the General Manager of the Deseret News. O. Preston Robinson, my former professor of marketing at the University of Utah, had succeeded Brother Petersen as the General Manager at the News. As I mentioned to Mark my dilemma, wondering if it would be unfair for me to move, he said simply, 'Your obligation to that area is concluded. Why don't you build a house in my ward?'"
-Thomas S. Monson, On the Lord's Errand: Memoirs of Thomas S. Monson, 1985, p. 184

This is racism, but given the time and era, it's understandable. At least, I can make some sense out of moving in 1956. Publishing the sentiment in 1985 kind of boggles my mind. "All in the Family" had made fun of Archie Bunker for this kind of thing by introducing the Jeffersons into the neighborhood. . . and that was in 1975. The joke is only funny if just about everyone already recognizes it to be bigoted.

My question is this; given that this is a public sin (publishing racist sentiments in a church published book) when and how should Thomas Monson publicly acknowledge, repent and seek forgiveness for his racism? Given his prominence and example to Mormons he has to acknowledge this and correct it so that others don't follow suit.

also, what's with all the name dropping?

In all of Monson's widow stories, were any of the women black?

Two comments..
Going to MEP for race advice ?? Srsly!!??
Kinda funny that things just don't change considering the Church just spent 5 Billion to push out the undesirables from the hood..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

In the "for what it's worth" category. Early in the 1970s, I had occasion to sit at a small lunch with Mark E. Petersen. One topic of conversation, introduced by him, was the enormous growth of the Mormon church in South America and the difficulty the church was having in identifying just who did and didn't have "negro" blood running through their veins. Her expressed that because of the church's position on blacks and the priesthood, this was creating a major dilemma for the church as it continued to grow and that a solution was being sought. I think we know what that solution eventually was.

How ironic. Pointing out someone's racist past is itself hate speech.

I understand where Facebook was coming from. Even the repetition of hate speech to prove a point, results in further dissemination of the hateful ideas. Exploring ideas of the past seems beyond Facebooks intended scope.

TSM is such a sacred cow that pointing out his past, from his own biography, is 'hate speech'?

It was the repetition of the 1956 idea that one should flee when non-pedigreed Mormons and generic gentiles move into the neighborhood that evoked Facebook's response.

If someone mentions the historical fact of the Third Reich's extermination of Jews on Facebook, is that shutdown because that would be 'hate speech' just to mention?

The best elementary training for pastors (=religious leaders...).

Catholic, Reformed and/or other seminaries should switch from Greek/Latin/Hebrew/old_school education to marketing. They could exceed Mormonism this way.

There have been some Mormons using the "report" button on Facebook any time an evangelical posts something critical of the LDS church or something that casts the LDS church in a negative light. Facebook tends to just pull the post without investigating the situation, issuing a 24-hour suspension to the allegedly offending party.

There is a Web site here dedicated to chronicling these acts of censorship, so you can see some of the stuff that Mormons are flagging as "hate speech." The latest was just an ordinary photograph of Shawn McCraney.
