That's pretty dumb. They don't see Utah banning Polygamy Porter.

I would hope they would. That's a ridiculous decision.

MCB wrote:OTOH, why are Mormons going into liquor stores? All they need to do is obey the WoW and they can avoid being exposed to offensive material.

Yeah. They shouldn't be looking at billboards on the interstate, talking with non-Mormon friends, or going into restaurants either.

MCB wrote:This is another example of Mormons believing that freedom of religion gives them license to violate the rights of others.

While I think it's a stupid move, it's obviously more an issue of wanting to protect their worldview from perceived antagonism, and using their influence to do so. OTOH, I don't want to get in the way of your attempt to paint this lovely rhetorical picture.

If Five Wives Vodka is only in State Liquor Stores, then how could Mormons wind up being offended by it? How many LDS members frequent those stores? LOL!

The ban must either be vindictive or attention-getting for some LDS politician.

Was this Vodka advertized on billboards? Are restaurants in the habit of dropping off bottles of vodka at tables?

I'm not sure I follow your point about "talking with non-Mormon friends."

MCB's appeared to me to be speaking broadly about avoiding offense at alcoholic beverages. I was pointing out that one simply cannot avoid advertising for alcoholic beverages, potentially offensive or otherwise, just by not going into a liquor store. Polygamy Porter, which is really no different from this vodka, conceptually, is advertised on billboards around Salt Lake City. Many restaurants include advertisements for their top-shelf and imported liquors in their menus (and many Latter-day Saints work in restaurants), and things like this are going to be brought up from time to time by non-Mormon friends and acquaintances. Look, I found out all about it without stepping a foot near a liquor store. Obviously it's not as simple as, "If you would just follow your religion like you're supposed to you wouldn't find out about it."

So, who is offended? The FLDS?

I don't get it. LDS Mormons aren't practicing polygamy.

Mak, this whole thread is supposed to be a rather light-hearted criticism on how easily Mormons take offense, and what they do in reaction to something that offends them. Although you are less easily offended than others, it still shows. That is the point.

Others are not obliged to tip-toe around LDS because they fear LDS might get upset. And why on earth are they so hypersensitive??

I'm not offended by the ads or by alcohol, I'm just correcting some of the criticisms that are being leveled and am getting a bit annoyed by some of the more obdurate dogmatists here.

There are a lot of people out there who spend a lot of time attacking Latter-day Saints, and that's naturally going to engender more sensitivity in a portion of the Mormon population. Might one reasonably ask why Jews are so hypersensitive about jokes aimed at their idiosyncrasies, or is that situation different? There are many who are not LDS who have acknowledged that bigotry toward Latter-day Saints seems to be completely and totally acceptable in American culture. Mormons aren't just fabricating this aggression they perceive.

I think there are people who attack Latter Day Saint beliefs, but not the members as individuals.

I agree that many attack LDS based on inadequate research, or superficial information given them by others.

Jews often poke fun at themselves, and Catholics also. We are so used to it that sometimes we allow ourselves to become punching-bags for anti-Catholicism.

Again, Mormon hypersensitivity may be rooted in the extreme improbabilities in your religion. At least ours is so old it becomes difficult to research the improbabilities.
