I have a Nook that I got as a present but I don't like it, becuse I can't zoom in or out when I put PDFs on it, making a lot of things too small to read.

Kindle. I love it. I read fully 25% of my books on it.

I love my Kindle 3 and I read some on my iPhone. I prefer the Kindle because the battery lasts, and because I don't like to read on a backlit screen. I got it during my last year of school and it was SOOO nice to not have to lug around a backpack full of books that year. I've also been very grateful to have it while traveling-- the 3G works even in Europe, and it has gotten me out of a few pinches. I've used Calibre to convert non-native ebook types so that they could be easily read on my Kindle and there is a nice browser plugin, "kindle it," that I use to send myself reading material from the internet. It's ridiculously convenient.

I've got friends with Nooks and iPads, and Kindle Fires, and they seem to love them too. I went kindle over Nook because of the better battery life and because the Kindle was lighter and I didn't like the Nook navigation. I also priced books and it seemed that Amazon was consistently cheaper (at the time). I'm sure iPad is fabulous, but I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone and an iPod and I just don't need another Apple device (and Apple doesn't need another penny from me). Plus, I just prefer the non-backlit screen for serious reading.

I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you get. From what I've seen, all the popular readers have some really great features.

How do you expect to use your e-reader? Do you want to use it for anything other than reading (e-mail, web browsing, etc.)? These are the sorts of things to ask yourself while looking into picking up an e-reader.

I have a Kindle 3 and love it for the reasons listed by angsty: ridiculously long battery life (as long as you turn "Wireless" off when you are not using it), 3G, and the ability to easily push web content to it from my pc. Like angsty, I use Calibre to convert other e-book formats to make them readable on the Kindle.

However, I only use my Kindle for reading. While it can be used for web browsing, it is a disappointing experience. This doesn't matter to me because I'm never very far from a pc. If my job didn't require me to lug a laptop around with me everywhere, I would probably look into picking up a an iPad (or maybe a Kindle Fire) although I would miss the battery life of my Kindle 3.

The battery life on the iPad is really good, too.

As everyone has said, though, it really does depend on what you are using your reader for.

My cousin has a Nook and is in love with it. He loves the availability of books at B&N.

My Mom loves her Kindle even thouugh she has an iPad. She likes the Kindle best for just reading.

My best friend has a Sony reader which she really likes because of the music feature.

I have one of the early models that my kids bought me a couple of years ago.

Convenient. I always have books with me that I need (or want) to read. It’s made it easier for me to keep current with my reading list. Since it’s not too expensive, if I drop it I’m not losing a computer; I’m just losing a Kindle. Battery life is amazing.

Readable. The screen technology is great. It’s not backlit; the font size is adjustable; one can read in full sunlight. Since I’m an old fart, these are important. I’m not sure how readable the Kindle Fire (with its backlit screen) will be, so I’m reluctant to upgrade.

Lending library. I can’t speak to this directly since I live in rural Bumf***, Idaho, and my tiny home library is larger than my county library—so my county library doesn’t lend Kindle books I want. My kids all have Kindles, though, and are able to borrow many books they want to read from their local libraries. I think this is available on the Nook, too.

Price. Of Kindle books. Not as good as they should be. I have mixed feelings about this. But that’s a whole essay of its own.

Preference. I buy a lot of books. Most are still in paper format because I can give them away or lend them out after I’ve read them (giving and lending are basically the same thing, in my mind). But, damn, I love seeing a book and getting it five minutes later and reading it that night. There are books I don’t really want paper copies of: 1) fast and easy trash reads, or 2) classics that I know I should read but that, afterwards, I’m never going to glance at again (these are often available for free). I have bought and read a book on the Kindle, then decided I wanted a hard copy of the same. I’ve also bought a hard copy of a book, started reading it, then purchased a more convenient Kindle copy to finish it.

What others like that I never use. The dictionary. Audio. Letting the Kindle read you a story in robot talk. They’re probably useful and desirable, though.

What I want. I want Kindle to make it easier for me to learn a language. The technology is already there in the unit. Someone needs to write the materials to make this work. This too, is an essay of its own.

I purchasaed the kindle about 2 years ago. It is good for just reading. I didn't care for it for technical books. It was too time consuming to go from one section of a book to another.

And I'm still not sure. What's the word for the psychological phenomenon where your brain shuts down if there are too many choices?

It's called free agency.
