That's the truth. The thirty-five years I lived in Seattle, my entire exposure to gays was a guy I sat next to on a bus one day and a guy I helped to give a blessing to in a hospital, and I never had any exposure to lesbians at all. When I moved to Dallas, our first domicile, an apartment, was kitty corner to a lesbian couple, and when we moved into the Richardson suburb we moved right next door to another lesbian couple. It was probably just a couple of coincidences, but it made me wonder if maybe the Dallas Metroplex was more gay friendly than my neighborhood in Seattle was.

It depends on the part of Seattle you speak of. You were probably in a more traditional area.

1985-1988 University District
1988-1989 Beacon Hill
1989-1990 Kent East Hill
1990-1992 University District again
1992-1995 High Point

Then we moved to Texas, and then in 2004 we moved to Utah.

No Capital Hill?

I never lived on Capitol Hill, but I knew people who did. I got involved in the Seattle Stake's singles ward, the Seattle Eleventh, about 1983. It included singles from all over the stake, but the bulk of the membership was from the area encompassed by the Seattle First Ward, and a sizable fraction of that lived on Capitol Hill. For a while I dated a lady who lived on Queen Anne Hill.

I was living in Seattle back in 1978 and remember the Initiative 13 vote quite well. Members of the church were apposed to gays having the right to live where they wanted. The Mormons were against gays having fair housing rights.

Paul, I am ashamed to admit that I worked for Initiative 13 while its proponents were trying to get it passed. I went to its offices and volunteered my time. If I remember right, I spent most of my time stuffing envelopes that were being sent out. At the time I was sort of a Libertarian, thinking that landlords should be able to do whatever they felt like with their property, even if it included keeping gays and lesbians out of them.

Since then I've altered my views considerably. Initiative 13 was simply wrong. People have the right to have a place to live. Volunteering for 13 was a huge mistake and Paul, I hope you can forgive me for my involvement. I will say in my defense that a few years ago my father asked me to sign a petition in favor of some other thing that would have fought against gay rights, and that time I refused to get involved.

Indeed. But it was sad to see the LDS church in favor of opposing basic rights to gays and lesbians. At that time I was a rebellious teenager using drugs and was engaged in homosexual relations prior to repenting and later going on a mission.

The LDS church in that area was not only against fair housing rights for gays but they (members) were pushing other issues too. TV shows such as Threes Company, Mary Hartman, and Soap, these were all on a hit list. I mean, come on! Threes Company is a harmless little show but church members made it out to be like ammo for the antichrist and an assault on families.

The LDS Church still excommunicates sexually active gays and lesbians. But a few months back the Church came out with a statement that it supports laws banning discrimination against gays in a number of areas. I thought that was an encouraging development, and somewhat of a reversal of its support for Seattle's Initiative 13.
